EGR Solenoid for MBC Bypass

A friend of mine with a 1988 Conquest Tsi used to run a MBC and had a EGR solenoid pre-MBC which had two outlet ports. One went to MBC, one to wastegate. It hooked up to 12v and from in-cabin could switch from stock boost, to set boost.

I want to run this setup. It's inexpensive to put together and would serve its purpose well (and come on, who wouldn't want to be able to flip a switch in-cabin to go from 7psi, to 12psi+). He said going from stock boost to a high-set level was like getting rear-ended.

Has anyone done this? I want to know where I can find a good 3-port EGR solenoid to do this (one inlet, from manifold, two outlets). It should be something that can be snatched from a junkyard for really short money if anyone knew of a car which used such a solenoid.

If I hear anything, get part #'s, or know where we could find one, I will either add to this thread, or post a fresh one about how to put one together. In theory, I think it could be done (MBC, t-fitting, hoses, EGR, switch) for under $50.

a vacume switching valve would fit in your pocket at the pick and pull. i did this about 6 years ago. got old. i never had it switched to the low setting so took it out and gave it away.

MBC = ~15
Hoeses - Free (bring a backpack and throw them in an empty compartment...)
Solenoid - Free (same idea)
T-fittings - Free (again...)
Switch - Radio shack has nice switches for under $5

so for under $30 you should be able to do it...
but once you up the boost, i think, like william said, you'll get sick of stock boost and just run 12psi all day. haha

Where did you get the vacuum switch valve?

Reminds me of a cheap version of the greddy profec B with the remote Hi/Lo switch. Get one of those guarded toggle switches like on nitrous systems and tell people its my NAWWWWZZZZ switch yo!

I may use this idea. You probably could use one of the VSV valves from most 80's toyota vehicles.

x2. Just run whatever your max boost is all the time.

same reason you have hi/lo setting on an EBC...

I'd love to run stock boost to conserve gas as it's too easy to boost with a stock CT...

You just run the main hose from the turbo through the MBC then to the wastegate, and make a bypass loop with the switching valve in it around the boost controler with a T before the MBC, then loop around it and T back in after the MBC. This way when the valve is closed, the air will go through the boost controller giving you your "high " boost setting. When the valve is open, the air will bypass the boost controller and give you your "low" setting which will be your wastegate base boost. This setup will only work on ball/spring type boost controllers, as they will be sealed up when not in use. Regular bleed type (regulator type) controllers wont work this way. I think I have a pic of my old setup......let me go look.
