Ok, this may sound stupid or like a good idea to some of you guys. On the back of the cylinder head, when you remove the EGR cooler....

Could you just tap the EGR feed hole and put like a stainless steel plug in it? Wouldn't have to worry about the EGR cooler leaking or anything like that. Yes, I have blockoff plates already. I just want to give the motor a little more space behind the head, and eliminate the possibilty of the EGR cooler getting loose and leaking.

Does this sound like a good idea guys?

there are a few that have done that. i plan on it when i decide to have the head rebuilt and machined.:evil2:

search around. theres even people that have built a "hillbilly" blockoff adapter. dont remeber names though.

You can just plug the hole and even put on all your egr stuff if you want. It wont do anything with the exhaust port hole plugged.

But it would be more appropriate for gixxer to have one of those hillbilly plates. ;)

we did this on my rebuilt motor..tapped the hole on the head and on the intake manifold and plugged with bolts. that way it eliminates the whole chamber instead of leaving it open for gasses to swirl around in.

I used a brass NPT pipe plug and some red thread lock. At first I was worried about bi-metal corrosion as well as the different expansion rates of the two metals but so far so good. I haven’t had any problems yet.

anyone know where i can buy the egr block off's?

and

do they add much power/efficiency?

It keeps the inside of the engine a little cleaner but it is not going to make a big difference in power. If your car is basically smog legal otherwise I would just leave it on and plug the vacuum line to it.

Parts list.
1) Large long bolt. (I just used a metric thread because I have metric taps and dies... but a SAE pip plug would work fine.)
2) Small plug.

The bolt is for the head, mine is long enough that I "ported" the end that stuck out into the #6 runner to make it smooth again. So far, no leaks whatsoever.

The plug is for the upper intake manifold. Just tap the hole, and plug it and your done.

Here is a pic of how it looks. No photos of the exhaust runner, but mine is coated as well along with the rest of the motor :) (Various thermal dispersants, barriers or powder coatings.)
