what car do you have? Turbo/Na,5speed/Auto,year of car all these could help you get your anwser.
I have an 87 na auto car being transformed to a turbo 5 speed an the jdm engine I bought came with a ECU that has all the labels crudely scratched off. Question is, when the labels are gone, is there another way to ID these units? My old na ecu is shaped similar, but I assume ya need a turbo ecu to use with a turbo. I'm a 50 year mechanic, but new to supras and turbos and don't know if these unit s can be modifided/re-chipped or should I just try what I've got and see what happens?

I wouldn't just try it, unless you want to pick up pieces afterwards
Fuel supply, and timing are VERY critical on a turbo car.

Hope someone can answer you on internal markings.

I would doubt that it has been chipped, since there are so few of them around.
Most are out of Japan, and will have a large lable on them from the company that did it.
Bad thing is with them, info on what injector size they were chipped for has long been lost to time.........

Right, the ecus differ in several key areas like air metering and ignition. What makes you think the ECU that came with the engine is no good?

Ps. Since your new to supras are you familiar with the head bolt retorque? or better yet swapping in a metal head gasket?

AFAIK the cases are all the same, but the connector ports are different between N/A and turbo. I doubt you would physically be able to plug a turbo harness to an N/A ECU, even if you managed to, the AFM and ignition systems are completely different I doubt it would ever run.

Honestly if you had both I would have thought all of this was quite obvious though...

There are different ECU plug configurations between early & late turbo ECUs,
and some of the NA & turbo ECUs take the same plug,
so don't just go by those diagrams.

Older turbo ECU's have an additional connector it seems, in addition to the N/A looking main connector area. But gofast is right, you could plug nearly all of a turbo harness into an NA ECU if both were pre-89 parts. (Attached is an older turbo ECU pinout.)

Ok sorry if I threw a curve ball. I have the old na harness and ecu (87 na/auto yellow plug harness, yellow plug ecu) and the new 89 turbo harness (grey plug automatic) and the grey plug ecu that came with the engine. Have already made neutral safety jumper as the grey plug harness came with the plugs all cut after the connector.

Question is, the grey plug ecu came with all paper labels crudely scratched off so how do I know what it actually is? It likely is the correct ecu for this turbo engine, but since the seller lied about so many other things how can I be sure? Please note photos are in album labeled rustfarmers' photos. Though it would be ok to try the grey plug harness and ecu, but wonder if the dash harness in my 87 ( which looks like it will plug right up) will be compatible with the 89 turbo harness? To test this I must first splice and lengthen the new harness since it is jdm right hand drive car(fair amount of work) so that's why I am driving everyone nuts with these questions. I find some information in other member's threads but this seems to come up a lot without any clear answers that I have found. I have asked this question in different ways in different threads and as a new member I regret any toes I have stepped on from lack of understanding usage rules. Thanks to all who have tried to help.
