Hey All,

I had my car on the dyno for the first time. I mean, I knew I wasn't making the stock 232HP, but damn. I was really disappointed.

It is completely stock with the exception of an AMSOIL intake filter.

I was getting a lot of burnt oil coming from what seemed the turbo and passenger side No. 2 Cylinder Head Cover. I haven't looked at the turbo to check for play. I'm just wondering if anyone could shed some light. Pooched turbo?

That doesn't look much lower than usual for a stock car. What are ambient temps and humidity there now?

The oil is likely leaking from your cam covers, then trickling down to the manifold and burning off. Also pretty common, especially on the turbo side - high temps will fry that seal, then it cracks and starts leaking.

So it will lose that much power over the 20 years? Wow! The temp was -1 celsius at the time. Not sure what the humidity was.

Thanks for the info Grim. Totally makes sense. Now I know where I'm losing my oil. Thanks!

It's not actually losing that much power - keep in mind, Toyota claimed 230 at the crank. That usually translates to ~190 - 195 at the wheels for an engine in flawless shape, under ideal conditions. 15-20% drivetrain loss is about average for rwd vehicles from this era.

Now take into account that your engine is 20 years old, and somehow I doubt you're feeding it air that's even vaguely cold, considering your location. Nowhere near the conditions that Toyota used to get 230 crank out of it, anyway.

Good to know and it's definitely encouraging. Come to think of it, the dyno is way back in the shop where this is very little air flow. They didn't use a fan either(not sure if that would help at all).

Guess I have to work a lot harder in order to get to my goal of 330HP.

Thanks again Grim!

No fan?!?! :aigo:

Well, It's a non-negotiable when my car hits the rollers. :)
For a completely stock setup, I'm not sure how much effect it would have actually made,
But heat kills. Especially if the humidity/temperature was already warm.

I know the numbers may be a bit discouraging, but as you've already discovered,
time & aging will have its toll.

But on the bright side of things, [given your engine is healthy],
You can free up some serious power just by ridding of the
old, restricted stock exhaust. :)

Next time you visit the dyno after spending less that $1K on; downpipe, cat back, test pipe, manual boost controller, & intake(besides buying new cam cover seals) IIRC downpipe alone has showen to increase HP by 25 on the dyno. Add a fan blowing threw the front of the car (flowing threw intercooler) I bet you will be posting a new responce and it will look something like this

"WOW!!! look at how much power I have on a 20 year old engine and spent way less than $1k in upgrades :evil2:"

Which I thought was odd! There was a fan, but it was behind my car. I'm assuming he had it setup for FWD cars. Being a dyno virgin, I didn't think to ask him to move it to the front of the car. :3d_frown: Next time I know.

So the good news is I have a 3" Raptor Racing setup (Divorced DP, catback, ceramic coated) sitting at home waiting to be installed (I can't go with the test pipe cuz they're illegal here.). This was the whole point of putting it on the dyno before the swap. I want to see how much of a gain I get. The MBC is right up there on my list of things to get.

Keep y'all posted!

Thanks for the info!

Ron

I see nothing out of line with those numbers for a stock car. Once you add on the parts you have already you will be essentially the same as my car. Only difference is that I have an MBC set for ~12 lbs.

You have no idea how much that car will wake up with that exhaust. I expect to see very large smiles at the next meet once you get the work done.

Good to know Jamie.

George has pretty much assured me that I will be pleasantly surprised with the results. If all goes well, I'll get it installed this weekend. I should be at the next meet! :naughty:

Finally got around to installing the Raptor Racing exhaust. Took it for a quick spin and WOW! :aigo: It's like my car can breathe again! I am very impressed. Time to go back to the dyno and see what the gain is. :naughty:

I'd get the Manual Boost Controller before going to the dyno again. You will again be surprised at the results. If you can't get the MBC, shim your wastegate (not advised). I think it is DrJones who sells the best one, and last I knew it was like $25.

As everyone has said, you dont have to work that hard at all. MBC, Piggyback, downpipe, catback, and you should be at 275... I  these cars!
