I don't think it was just a case of More bad drivers, they were just all bad drivers there lol. I mean here in Az not everyone is great but most times people drive ok. In Cali no one seems to signal for a lane change even, no one gets the left lane is the fast lane. Ya its just a lot more people but there weren't any good drivers mixed into the bunch lol.
Lol yeah that reminds me of driving in Cali, you learn early on that if a driver is kind enough or not in a big enough of a hurry that he actually uses his signal, he is also kind enough or or not in a big enough of a hurry to force his way in. So you don't worry about them. People that know what they're doing, know that if you want to get over you just have to do it, it's defensive driving taken to it's most extrem. And you don't hesitate or second guess a lane change, people can smell it like fear, if you do you'll never get over. You just tear in there like God parted the Red Sea.
As far as the other problem you mentioned, everybody knows the left lane is the fast lane, even 18 wheelers and 80 year old grandmas, so everybody gets in it making it the slow lane.
For a few months i used to commute from Escondido up to Irvine on the Five. That was a nightmare. Before that I was a good, courteous driver. In the few months I made that commute turned me into a rude, asshole on a mission to get from point A to point B, just like every other commuter. I was glad when I went back to Colorado, driving is so much more relaxed there.
L.A. Drivers are a bread of their own. They are a more evolved, more aggressive form of the California driver. At just about any given point in time on the L.A. freeways, it reminds me of a feeding frenzy with sharks, and I tell you, there is a lot of blood in the water. The only drivers that scare me more than L.A.'s drivers is Italy's drivers. The drivers in Italy, especially in Rome, make L.A's drivers look completely sane and timid.
