my understanding was :

oversteer is a fairly natural thing to happen in certain conditions during road racing. there was some racer in japan that exaggerated it a lot to please crowds even though he wasnt winning the race. keiichi tsuchiya and others saw that guy doing it, and started practicing specifically that themselves. they did it, more people did it, then it got a name and enough people doing it to be recognized as something other than regular oversteer. sometime in teh late 90s / early 00s best motoring or someone had an exhibition at i think willow springs? some track in CA....which was the first "official" appearance of drifting as a recognized thing in the US....then D1, then tokyo drift, and now 17 year old kids drifting their 350Zs on the way out of the school parking lot :D

The actual sport drifting was invented in Japan, a popular japanese racer started sliding around turns to get through the corner faster and he noticed the crowd's reaction to the smoke from the slides and controlled cornering, and from there it began.....

^That's all nice and good guys but without a cited credible source, it doesn't do him much good. You might as well be saying Steven Hawking invented drifting in his wheel chair using his overwhelming intellect and mastery of our physical world.

"so and so on SM" doesn't count as an acceptable source he could use in his paper.

If you have a link to your information, that would be great.:) Otherwise, it's just opinion and opinions are next to useless as far as research is concerned.

I don't think it is fair to say that drifting was "Invented" in Japan. Watch Formula 1 and road races from the 50's and 60's. I'm sure drifting has been around almost as long a cars have.

agreed. its just that "drifting" as its own thing only came about recently. before it was just oversteer.

Americans Invented "drifting."

Back in the 1920's, a southerner named Bowie Jefferson was sliding his car around on the dirt in rural Georgia.

Around that time, a Japanese business man saw him doing this and took the idea home with him.

His name was Konedo Omurata.

Fast forward to the 50's, and Konedo is on his death bed. He told his Grandson, Tokishi Omurata about what he had seen.

Now, fast forward to the 60's here in the states, and you have sprint car racing on the dirt. "Drifting" their cars around the dirt.

Over in Japan drifting was born, "Drifting" their cars around the pavement.

No Im only kidding honest. I made it all up. But seriously, men all over the world, especially here in the states where cars were available in mass surplus, have been sliding cars all over the place on the dirt.

I really think he meant drifting as a sport. Like as it's known today. Kinda of like how drag racing wasnt an organized sport until long after cars started dragging.

Jon you friggin crack me up. Keiichi Tsuchiya is known as the "grandfather" of drifting, so I would say it's safe to venture that he "invented" it. The first US drifiting comp was at irwindale speedway in CA in 2000 (?). It all started as a way to get around corners faster because tires back then weren't quite as grippy as they are today. Keiichi then began practicing in mountain passes while delivering Tofu and eventually became the new DK in his AE86.
