Door moldings - proper installation method?

When my car was painted last summer, I stripped it down, and the body shop did not put the door moldings back on correctly. They didn't fix the broken clips, and they used all kinds of 2-sided tape that resulted in wavy door moldings. Since I have to get a new PS door, the moldings will be done right. I need to know exactly which 3M double-sided tape to use - what size, thickness, etc did you find worked the best? Also, how did you repair the broken clips? I was thinking of using a powerful adhesive to put the clips back on the molding, but I am open for suggestions. What I don't want to do is silicone the whole molding back on. It wasn't that way out of the factory. The factory method made it look nice and straight. Thats what I want.

I did some digging on SM, didn't find this specific query, so share your ideas and it might help some other folks out.

Thanks!!!

the mouldings came with adhesive on them from the factory... in my experience, they dont mount up perfectly when you have to reapply the adhesive. new mouldings would be the route i would go if i just got my car freshly painted

Make sure you have fresh clips AND the black insert that the clip slips into. Yes... the insert goes in the little hole and the clip goes into the insert.

I didn't add any new tape to my mouldings....just new (to me) clips and the ones that slide in the door. The front of the door moulding has an 8mm nut holding it in. The rest stays well without tape.

I believe the tape helps seal the molding. Use new moldings if possible, my original ones the clips and the metal piece molded in started to rust and bubble on the outside. You could push on the bubbles and hear and feel rust grinding.

That's your problem...update to the later trim. No metal to rust.

Where did you get the clips and inserts? Toyota? Or did you rifle through the stuff at Autozone?

Its a 90. No rust or metal. The lack of clips caused the waviness.
