So I went to Toyota to see if they could cut me some new keys using my VIN number.(My only key is worn so bad it has trouble starting the car.) The guy said that their database only goes back to 1990. He said that there should be a key code on the pass. lock cylinder. Can any one verify this? Also, I was checking the TSRM on removal of the cylinder and it said to remove two nuts to remove the cylinder with the handle. Any one know what two bolts? I know where one is but not the other. I shouldn't have to mess with the window to do this right? Thanks.

Yes the number is stamped on the passenger lock cylinder. If you take off the door skin, the lock should just be held in by 1 10mm bolt.

it took ace hardware 3 trys to get my keys copied....i had to ask her to make it thicker because it wouldnt stay in the ignition...

its nice to know that at least some cars have key-codes on file. not mine...but some.

Have you tried lowes or home depot? I would suggest trying to get a key cut there. Sometimes on the machines they use the keys come out a with more material on the teeth than the original copies (I know... I worked there).

Worth a shot... Taking the door apart is a pain in the ass.

Don't get a copy made. Open up the passenger door panel and look for the key code and get a NEW key made.

I just did one for a guy with a 92 Supra today. :)

(Canada's database goes back to 1994 only).

I just got one cut from Toyota for me today. It was somewhat of a pain to get it out because of all the little moving rods that lock/unlock the door. Be careful not to crack any of the little plastic barb type fasteners that are at the ends of the rods. Hopefully your code will be clear; even though its engraved, mine was very very had to read. After a lot of cleaning and looking at it with a flashlight from different angles I got the right code.

EDIT: ^^^mine was free today! i didnt hear exactly what he said but it was something with the fact that the door lock cylinder model i had provided for a free copy??? i didnt really get it but i wasnt going to say no

I went to Toyota today and got three new keys. We were not able to read the stamped code though. The guy just laid my key on a piece of paper and made some lines and said "back in a minute." He came back and the new key worked!!! He was able to somehow "read" the key, I was amazed to say the least. Just thought I'd share.

He read the cuts, it's not hard if you know how many levels there are for a specific blank and have a working key or lock to go off of. It results in a truer cut than just copying a key with a guide.

Congrats.

But, after taking apart 2 GM doors working with the window assy, these doors seem like children's play to take apart. I'd gladly do them ten times over in exchange for doing one GM door.

Getting one cut from the key code (the number on the cylinder) is pretty much a new key.
