Ultimately I guess it falls back on us, because I never hear anybody insisting that the right laws be enforced. :3d_frown: Everybody's too willing to be spoonfed misleading information about speed and highway deaths. Somebody want to take up the cause?!

GL, who ever starts that up, you will be takin on the government on that one, and 99% of the time... they win

You right about that, but you would also be proposing a nationwide culture change. Want to talk about hard to do? Doesn't make it any less the right thing to do, though.

Its easy to brainwash someone, but its harder to get them to change.

Brainwash them into changing, happens all the time.

Once someone is brianwashed into a set way, getting them out of that mindset is very difficult. Its almost locked in as an instenct.

Enforcement is really dependent on where you live, and what agency is pulling you over. I was coming back from the coast not too long ago and got pulled over for doing 73 in a 55. He gave me a warning and said if I keep it around 65-70 I wont get pulled over for speed. He was a County Sheriff, and obvioulsy wasnt worried about speed enforcement. If it had been a State Trooper, I would have gotten a ticket most likely.

As for laws governing safety, they ALL need to be enforced. The problem is its harder to spot a driver thats distracted, (or for that matter just plain incompetent) than it is to spot one speeding or making an unsafe lane change. Im all for enforcement, but I really think the way to cut down on unsafe driving is to have higher standards for licencing. In Arizona my licence was good for 25 years! ....ummm? not everyones driving skill gets better with age! While it would be a pain in the butt, I think mandatory road testing should have to be done every 5 years. But I would also like to see a new class of licence issued for good drivers. To get that class of licence one would have to complete so many hours in a driving simulator as well as performance obstacle course training (something similiar to what the cops have to pass). This new class of licence would allow those that have it to qualify for cheaper insurance, and maybe pay reduced fines for any violation or some other benifits.

anyway, thats just my thoughts on the subject.

Completely agree. I just got my license a few months ago, I've ranted about this before.

I had already learned how to drive long before I got my permit, and drove away from the DMV with it, but the driver's ed (classroom instruction-I did mine online) and the training (6 hrs behind the wheel) were useless. It took me about 2 hrs to complete the online thing, it was almost all common sense. The drivers training was utterly pointless. OK, lets drive around for a couple hours cramed (I'm 6'3) in a Corolla, learn how to parallell park said 4 foot long Corolla, and try not to freak out on the freeway as the Corolla struggles to keep up with te semi's going 55.

Accident avoidance? Nope. Car control? Nope. Car physics and dynamics? Nope. Anything useful? Not unless you didn't know what those things the driver pushes on with his feet were...

They need to have a closed course where you practice recovering from a skid on a wet road, and things suddenly coming at you, and how the weight shifts and throws a car off balance during emergency manuevers.

Funny, I learned balance and car dynamics and physics in Gran Turismo. I was amazed at how close to real life it is. That said, a video game can never substitute for real life training.

Then, getting my license was a JOKE. We drove arond for 20 minutes, and never left a 1/2 mile radius of the DMV. Never went above 35. Never got near the freeway. Never had to park. It was ridiculous. A monkey could've passed.

The test to get your license should involve driving in all conditions, freeway, parking lot, city streets, making sure you can park, etc. Should be a few hours. Believe it or not, you should actually have to be a good driver to get a license. What a concept!

Then, they should road test every so often-maybe 7 years or so. 5 might be a little overkill. And speeding is not the most dangerous thing. Its the distracted drivers this thread is talking about.

^^^ Totally agree. Getting a license is just WAY too easy. Your 20min test drive was about 2X longer than mine was. I drove around the block a few times, did a 3 point turn, then drove back to the DMV. Tests should be more difficult. I know in Spain (at least it used to be like this) you have to pass a written test, a pretty long real world test drive, and a timed obstacle course which involves many different facets of driving. It's tough and a lot of people have to take tests multiple times.

Sometimes I'd like to be a DMV tester, and I'd make testees do all kinds of shit, then do random things like just start screaming out of nowhere to see what their reaction would be. I'd have a lot of flunkees.

another interesting fact of the autobahn is that it is a more well-maintained driving surface than any american race track is.
that's crazy, i think i'm packin my bags for germany right now, because i am honestly sick of bad drivers here, seems like every day, i have to do something crazy to avoid an accident, because people simply cannot comprehend the simple priciples required to properly maintain/drive a car

yes glad to see its not just me. few days ago a mercadis cuts me of and when i go to change lanes to get around the guy he not only blocks me but trys to push me off the road wtf. then today another group of stupid people i got cut off at least five times. and i like the sound of that test in spain. but what i dont like is how america just keeps upping the age for driver im sorry but two years of not driving is not going to make someone a better driver

I don't think it's a matter of a more dificult driving test, because just about anybody can drive perfectly when they need to. It's just a matter of people driving eratically at will.
