This morning, my comp worked... I leave, let my new roomie use my comp, come home it doesnt work...
:icon_evil
"I just went to a few sites"
:3d_frown:
Jesus...
:1zhelp:
Any clue what it could be? Here are the symptoms as I can see: comp wont turn on... Looks like its in sleep mode... When I turn it on, when its running normally, the power light is green, when it goes into sleep mode, the power light is orange... So when I turn the comp on, nothing happens, the key board lights dont work, the mouse has its laser light on, the monitor wont come on, it doesnt go through its start up, all that happens is the power light comes on orange... I can hear something in there making noise, but its just not booting... Almost seems like the mother board is not getting poweror something... Im pissed... I dont even care so much that it wont turn on, what scares me is all my shit on the hard drive being lost... All my build pics, all my family pics, my music, Tamara's school stuff, etc...
I've just never seen this happen before...

Make sure your video card, ram, cpu,ps,hdd and monitor are a)all getting power b)nothing has shorted c)make sure everything is plugged in right (wires, cards, plugs etc..)

funny as it seems, people tend to overlook these small things and it can always be stupid little things. From there we can continue to look to see if its more into a hardware or OS problem.

Also if you hear some weird peeps on bootup then its something before POST, you can diagnosis and find out what it is by reading your MB's Manual or searching it onlinel.

YES! Manuals can be your be friends ;).

If anything start eliminating things that are not necessary to get the PC started. remove sound card,floppy,CD-rom,network card & any peripherals.. etc.

HDD,ram,PS,Video Card, Mouse,Monitor, Keyboard - if it doesn't boot with the most essential things needed 2 start then we start looking into your BIOS or HDD problems.

*Also another good thing to do is see if u can find other users with your similar problem and sometimes you can narrow down it down to something that might have happened to your PC (Forums,Boards,Groups)

**Bad drivers, corrupted system files, system files that have been deleted or viruses can sometimes lead 2 problems like this. testing out another HDD can help 2 see if its your HDD or your PC components that mighe be giving u a problem as well

Hopefully that can give u an idea on where 2 start.

i doubt anything is wrong with your harddrive. what i would do is completely unplug your computer then start it up. i can honestly say i doubt that any cruising anyone has done could seriously mess it up.

open your case and see how dirty it is... if its dirty shoot some compressed air in that bad boy... an overheating CPU will cause all these troubles so will an overheating harddrive.... and dust in general will make it overheat.

i cant say much beyond that because i really cant tell if im not there heh.

if you want now is a good time to upgrade ;)

computers are really easy to deal with i doubt you lost anything on your harddrives.

(this is if you want to get your stuff off the harddrive and not try to dick with it getting to work) to take them out crack open that case (or unscrew whatever is holding it) find your harddrives ( they look like little ECU's) unplug it by the plug and take them out. there is a little jumper on the back and several pins. these are master, slave, and cable select. your primary harddrive, or master harddrive, should be the one with the operating system on it. your slave is just your secondary harddrive. im pretty sure you use an 'older' IDE harddrive setup where you have one grey cable. the cable at the end should be your master and the next is your slave. or you might just have a master i dont know.....

once you take that out you can plug it into another computer, set the jumper on the back to slave or drive select and put it in another computer. if that computer has only one harddrive it prolly has only a wire that will connect that one harddrive. if your old one has two harddrive take that one out and put it in the second computer. set the normal computers harddrive in the end 'master' piece (make sure you keep an eye on which one comes off the mother board because it will have to plug back in the motherboard)

and put whichever harddrive you have on the slave end of the cord. you should access your harddrives without any trouble

Yeah, probably... :( The other day she typed the word "PORN" in my address bar... You cant take that out of the address bar with out erasing all your history... I was like, look, here are a few sites that are safe, blah blah...

GWS: Nothing is unplugged... I opened the case, nothing is out of place... The case sits in a desk, so it doesnt ever move... I dunno, its just blah...

good info it is a good place to start.

i wonder how old is your computer? doesnt sound like it is his ram because it would start without it/with it corrupt it just wont load windows... same with a harddrive. might be with your CPU / motherboard / power supply.

if it is your video card you will hear it start up normal it will even play your startup windows sound ( if you have it ) you just wont have a picture on the screen and the monitor will either say no signal or act like its in sleep mode

Yea dust is not a PC's best friend =)
Fan failure can lead to BHG if you want me to put into a way u can understand it ;)

**EDIt**
btw they make safety features on the actual CD 4 pin power plug, so you won't accidentally put it in backwards ;)

I let a friend use my PC for 3 HOUrs! I come back and he tells my PC got a BSOD and it doesn't wanna reboot.
He "somehow" accidently deleted my Windows folder & my program files :3d_frown:

needless to say no1 touches my PC anymore since that day (unless im supervising :biglaugh: )

Tlo: It was dusty in there, I wiped out what I could... I dunno if heat, maybe... Could the power supply be getting bad? I do have 2 HDs... Yes old IDE... Familiar with the pins... So I will def do that... Im building a comp wioth my dad, mentioned it in the game thread, so I might have to get that done sooner than I thought... Anyway, its just frustrating, if it happened to me, that would be one thing, but when it happens by someone else's hand, its just frustrating... Cuz I cant get mad at her, I dunno if she did it or if its like ya say, something stupid, like a hot hard drive...

One question you don't happen to have Quantum Fireball or Western Digital HDDs do you?

*Edit*
you know its actually pretty hard to mess up a MB. In all my times of building, fixing, repairing and cleaning PCs have i encountered one real bad MB. Its usually one of the other components that work in hand with the MB that give out before the MB does.

MB's don't usually go bad, they're usually bad right out of the box...

but you mentioned you had one of the notoriously bad PC's... had a friend that had that brand and before he got his money back, he had EVERY component replaced over a course of a couple months cause they kept failing...

yea thats how it goes, MB 100% of the time come from the manufacturer already defected. MB that are good when you bought will be good 5-10 years down the road. MB are espectially made to last unless they might have flaws but those are usually more problems that come right from production.

the MB i've been running for the 5-8 months is my ASUS Crosshair MOBO. I  it
yeaa i think i built this rig after new years... i can't remember oh well =P.
I DO remember i had this rig before i bought my supra though lol

Also another PC component that often fails the most in PCs are PS or Fans.
Usually from that it will start affecting your whole PC little by little.

Does your power supply fan come on? If no, replace PS. If yes, might be time to check voltage at PS commector.
Do other fans come on when you push the power button? If no, replace Mobo, if yes, check CPU.
That is my rough guide. If you have another computer, I'd spring for an external enclosure, pop the hard drive out of the broken computer, stick it in the enclosure and plug it in via USB to the other computer to grab and backup all of your important files.
