so i was wondering if there was a way to wire up a msd proformance coil instead of the stock ingintor coil. i mean if you take 4 screws off the top of the stock coil you get two peices and the top is the coil it slef and it has a postive and a megative. to me that is all you need for a proformance coil but me question is will that wire up to the stock ecu and all that and actually work?

Yes ,it will work with the stock ignitor.I use a MSD blaster coil, mounted it to 2 of the 4 posts from the stock coil.Have to tuck it real close against the ignitor to clear the hood.If you need to know what wire is which(color code for +&-,let me know,I will go out and check for ya.

u can even use the igniter .thats how i wired mine up just the 2 wires that would have gone to stock coil. the msd coil will even mount ontop of the stock igniter with the crome strap that comes with it i even used 2 of the 4 stock mounting bolts with a few washers

awe some thanks guys but which would be better using the stock igniter or just hooking it staight up. i'm worried about reliablity more than anything right now a i like the fact that its easier to get an aftermarket one than to get a stock one at the local autoparts store.

The stock ignitor is what sends the "spark" signal to the coil, that is how you hook it up direct.Otherwise you'll need a full ignition system(like MSD 6AL) to send a signal to the coil.Been running this setup (stock ignitor,MSD coil)for 264,000 miles now in my cressida,so I think it's reliable.

Nothing really special to see,Had these on my camera from a while ago when it was out of the car(had to rewire a lot of the engine compartment, thieves stole my system, when they yanked the wire for my amps it shorted out,and in turn, started on fire til the fuse finally blew.Burned all the vacuum lines and alll the wiring off the driver side of the motor.)Real simple,tan=pos.,black=neg.The chrome mount for the coil bolts right to the posts from the stock coil, mine was off in the pic because the chrome was peeling/rusting and I wanted to replace it.

aight thanks so much now i know what i'm going to do in the next couple of days which do ya'll suggest high vibration, or all the other different types. i noticed that toy fanatic78 you got a high vibration coil in your pics so is there any types to stay away from or any that ya'll recommend?

I originally had that coil on my first MK2,which I beat the snot out of on MI dirt roads, that's why I picked the high vibration one.Never heard anything bad about any of the available MSD coils.

Nick M what you mean and/or how do you do this? secondly if running a stock ignitor do you need the ballast resistor thing?

i got the msd blaster 2 today and wired it up like ya'll said and nothing no spark. but i tested and there is power going in but nothing is coming out. i hope i didn't mess anything up with it. any ideas or suggestions?

I've never had a problem with them, done it that exact way on a couple of my MK2's,my MK3,and my cressidas.Don't know why you wouldn't be getting spark now if you were before you changed the coil.
