Toyota says to tighten it by hand until you feel a light resistance, then go 3/4 of a turn further. I guess I'll have to see next time I do it
Upon contact turn another 3/4 to full turn. It is much easier with the strap wrench.

edit: seems like the filter box says 3/4 to full turn. I don't remember. Oil changes are such a non issue.

I had to use the Screwdriver technique right when I got the car. except it was on there so good the screwdriver just peeled the filter off and I was left with grabbing onto shards of the filter with vise grips. Damn the dealer.

Ug. I had to use the screwdriver today and all it did was start to open the filter like a can opener. Then I remembered that I was not going to be using that engine anymore and it didn't matter!

If only that where true. Its kinda like "If common sense where truly common, everyone would have it."

Why doesn't everyone have a filter wrench that fits the filter? Screwdrivers are a last resort when all else fails, not a normal tool, lol.

Like when you have a bunch of tools, but the filter is smaller than all of them, then a screwdriver is needed ;). Otherwise, I'll still to my filter wrench. I hate strap wrenches too, they suck.

Technically, common sense is simply things you should not have to be taught. Many however are in the "slow learners group". And I don't mean the short bus either.

It is a non issue because it isn't hard to undo the drain plug, remove the filter, and replace with a new unit and refil until the dipstick says you are good to go. I swear Supra owners come up with some of the weirdest "difficult jobs" I have ever seen.

edit: I had to correct "difficutl"

Kinda work like this: Every I buy a new car, that car comes with a filter I can't get off. New filter size = having to buy a new wrench. Between my two brothers and I we now have 3 strap wrenches and 3 filter sockets. None of those fit the filter! :icon_bigg

I used to take my Supra into Firestone to get the oil changed. One time they didn't put the washer back on and the car started leaking oil like crazy (around a quart a day, I think!). I never took it back there again.

I'd buy one for every single car I owned. It makes no sense not to... they're like what, $3.00?

Eh true. But They almost never get used again after that. I can always get my filter off by hand doing my own oil changes.

I cannot imagine getting my hands in to remove the 7MGTE filter. Even with the head and exhaust removed I still couldn't get in there with the engine mount right beside it. Unless your time is worth nothing or you don't plan to keep the car more than one oil change, the right tool will provide the best return on investment. IMHO

Personally, I love working on my car. Its very much a part of being a car/racing enthusiast for me.

Uh.. I wanted ot say something but I'm not. So I'll leave it at:
1. I STILL think it's stupid for me to get my ahnds dirty and put it w/ all of that for $10
2. It's my choice, don't worry about it
3. I'll change an engine to save a few hundred (atleast), but I wont get my hands dirty to save $10
4. Why in the hell would you say something stupid like that about someone when you didn't know them?

*edit*
let me add I have YET to buy a running Supra, and have YET to pay someone to do work for me, I lied, machine work I can't do because I admit I don't know shit about it.

What I said in that first post was because you made changing oil sound like pulling teeth. It is your choice and I am not worried about it at all. To me its not about the $10 its knowing exactly what is going on with my car and knowing its done right.
You do most of your own work on your cars? Great! Welcome to the club. Its just that hearing someone who works on cars regularly and is so worried about dirty hands and busted knuckels is a bit odd.
Sorry I pissed you off so bad.
