I notice that when you run without one its harder to turn. Cause I would start the car up cold in the morning and the power steering was perfectly fine, then when the car really warmed up it was back to almost no power steering. You could notice on really cold nights the power steering would begin to work again. It needs to be cooled for efficiency sake and to save your pump.

Yes, JZA70s came with one. IMO the supra doesn't need PS, but that isn't for this conversation. If you have a PS system, you NEED a PS cooler. I have on of the universal ones from a local parts store. I think its a 7 row, keeps the PS fluid system cool if you don't have any kinks in the soft line.

Does anyone know why most PS coolers (oem & aftermarket) are either just bent tubing or tube/fin designs? I don't see any bar/plate coolers for power steering use while searching around. Most coolers offered specifically for PS are pretty wimpy looking compared to oil/tranny coolers.

As I understand, bar/plate type coolers are more efficient. It's not possible to cool the PS system too much is it? Is it an issue of flow rate?

I've had a bar/plate PS cooler on my truck since I swapped in my 1j. I figured the more the better... Especially since the pump will no doubt be working harder with my larger (than Supra/Soarer) tires.

It has been working fine for about 6k miles now...The pump hasn't died and the PS feels normal. Just wondering if bar/plate coolers are somehow bad for a PS system and if I should switch to a tube/fin for any reason.

TIA for any input.

The #1 killers of hydraulic pumps (like the PS pump) are heat and debris. Cooler wise, a tube & fin cooler is fine...heck, you can use your old 7M oil cooler (flush it out) and it work great. The PS system does not generate that much heat...the rail type coolers would work even better. You don't have to go nuts with a cooler...a RX-7 cooler would be waaayyy too much and you really don't need a T-stat (the RX-7 cooler has one built in).

You could use the tranny cooler found in an auto tranny radiator. IMO, an air cooled type is better.

I would also install a magnafine filter as pointed out in the above thread...on the return line to the Resv.

he used the radiator tranny cooler as a ps cooler

i did this and it killed my pump, added way too much heat to the pump fluid. please everyone, never do this! I used a 7M OEm oil cooler and it worked perfect.
