I've been stranded on the road several times due to overheating and once due to an ignition problem.
The overheating started after about 5 years from when I bought the car new making a trip to LV and lasted until I overheated and locked the motor locked up (about 6 years ago). That's about 7 years of bhg driving.
The ignition problem happened just after the warrenty was over. But Toyota replaced the distrubuter for free. It left me stranded in the fast lane on the freeway.
I've had the clutch slave and master cylinders leak to where I lost the clutch. But in one case I was at home leaving, and the other I managed to make it home.
The alternator has gone out once.
I've had countless batteries in the car. I didn't drive it much when it was new so the battery kept going dead.
I'm on my second set of tires, plus one. One of the front tires had to be replaced when I went up to the mountains and got something in the sidewall. That was when it was new. That tire was an odd ball because the factory tires had 7 grooves, the regular Goodyear VR's had 5 grooves. So I had the Goodyear place put the 5 groove one on. The tires lasted about 50k miles.
I've got 2 door ding on the right side and a scratch on the rear window when a 50 lb glass aquarium with gravel bounced off the rear window from the garage rafters during the Nortridge earthquake. The corner of the aquarium actually hit the rear window wiper which hit the rear window. The aquarium bounced off the glass and fell next to the driver's rear tire shattering, but never touching the body. I still can't believe it.
The car needs new paint. (I don't see how you guys keep the paint up.)
I've had the car new since Nov 1987. It has about 80k miles on the body. During its mid life the Supra has been on several 700+ mile trips without any problems (except the one LV trip).

I'd say in the 18 years I've had it, other than the bhg problem, its been extremely reliable. Its certainly been a joy to drive.

(Sorry to be so long winded. I though I'd qualify my answer.)

Original owner - wow just curious how much did you pay for it back then?

He used to take me to and from school and everywhere. I grew up in this car.

That's sick. That car has managed to stay damn clean...I'm assuming your dad didn't just buy it and kick it around, garaged all its life?

It all boils down to proper maintenance. If you think it looks bad,(i.e. belts) more than likely it's going to snap. You need to keep ahead of the problem on these cars. If you bought it used, there is no telling how the previous owner took care of it. One of the problems I see and read about is how some kid bought a Supra and started installing high dollar add-on's like BOV's,bigger turbo's,and the like. They never take into consideration that this will affect something else down the powertrain, and when that or other parts fail, they bitch about how the Supra is a piece of shit, and how they were better off with a Honda!!! Seriously, these cars are usually on average about 16 years old. Things are going to wear out,and more than likely be forgotten or neglected. BUY A USER MANUAL AND KEEP THE CAR UP! The recommended service pages are not just for reading...

I paid around $21K (fleet price) out the door for an '87 7MGE Supra back in Nov 1896.
The 7MGTE would have run me over $24K (no discounts). At that time it was too much money. But now looking back, I probably should have forked over the extra cash.
I've got the original window sticker, the buyers contract, the 1987 Repair Manual and original brochure.

it just came back out of the garage about 2-3 years ago now. before that it was in there for about 6-7 i think. because of an incident when it was stolen when we first moved to CA living in some apartments. car never ran right after and eventually died... then we had the engine rebuilt. i started driving the car more than him, and yeah, you know the rest. now he doesnt even wanna drive it anymore, too loud. lol.

well my car hasn't done the burb ever since i refilled it with coolant. i think its gone. now the wheel bearing are still making the nopise from previous installation. they are brand new so i don't know why it's making the sound but its only been 700 kms since my mech installed them so he has to do something about it. how long does it take usually for bearing to be like 'broken in'. i heard that they need at least 1500 for them to get used to the cars weight driving type etc. Also could my drift everyonce in a while wreck them by chance? Thanks for everyones input thus far tho :D
