Heh mine has been driving for 3 weeks now and hasn't given me any more problems. In the stock for will this car be a reliable as every other car because so far it has drained me of 7000 but after i drop in a new JDM engine and MHG it with the ARp headbolts during winter and after going BPU, will it just be a fine DD? I haven't really driven it hard lately other then some friendly runs. Oh and i change my oil every 4000 kms if anyone is wondering :p

Mine has been my DD for more than 8 years. It has also made several 1000+ mile trips without difficulty. It put me on the side of the road ONCE in that whole time. Not too bad if you just take care of the thing. The only other time it has been down a long time for MX was for a motor swap and now while I am changing my turbo setup. I still trust this car to an incredilble degree.

Mine's been my DD for just over a year now. No road trips yet, but I did deliver pizza in it for a while(transitional job, back in IT now). Hasn't given me any trouble since the HG. Did some major maintenance on it though(PS rack and lower control arms).

ugh i have officially jinxed myself. Holy shit man this is bad haha never again will i talk smack about the car. so anyway im driving around and after makign a rouutine stop. i continue to drive normally again. on my way home i notice like something dropping onto my windsheild. I thought i was the rain but it wasn't rainign yet. all of a sudden a big splash comes from my hood and onto my windsheild. i pull over. i see my temperature gauge goooo waaaay high. then all of a sudden it drops down to normal then i drive it home. Nothign happens again. i open up the hood at home and it looks like my coolant like burped. it is like half full and the one hose that is there (the one that doesn't go anywhere) is wet and bunch of my coolant is just like sprayed over the edge of my hood. wtf just happened? did it just like burp? i have no leaks from my engine bay aside from a veeeery small one form the top of my rad on the plastic part that only leaks during hard driving. So does anyone have any idea of what this is? I thoguht it was my windsheild washer fluid but it wasn't :( Its definately from my green coolant and what can i do to make sure its not a big problem. my car does have slightly lower oild pressure then normal (i am running lucas oil as well as castrol syntec) but i am almost sure that i dont have a BHG cause my oil cap isn't milky neither is the oil from the dipstick. Honestly ill drive it again around the same area and ill try to figure out hwat it is b4 sundown.

LOL... I like how you waited to get home before opening the hood!

Where did it come out of... the overflow?
yeah that was a typo. i meant to say i opened it when i was at home (happened like a few feet away from my house) and yeah it was from the overflow. i think i might have been just cause i had too much coolant but that doesn't explain how my temp gauge shot up and back down quickly.unless it does. Can anyone help me?

new update, my coolant level is fine when its heated up i have a theory about what happened. one of the thermostats didnt open upon time when the engine was heating up so the engine didnt suck in any coolant to cool down thats why it overheated and as that happened some pressure build up since that thing wasnt open and thats why some coolan t blew out in the front. is this a good theory? im gonan go check out my levels when its cold.

My car did the exact same thing it was crazy there was coolant everywhere. Week or so later my oil started to get very milky. It is more then likly a bhg run a compression test and leakdown test ASAP and get that shit fixed!

is it really necessary to get a compression test on a rod knockd engine? even if it is a BHG, im changing the engine during winter.

I totally trust my car. I'd be happy to take it anywhere; because I take good care of it doing routine maintenance and replacing anything that even looks worn out or slightly rigged or malfunctioning.

I have coolant temp, fuel pressure, and oil pressure guages which I watch pretty well. But i really don't ever worry about getting stranded.

I've been stranded on the road several times due to overheating and once due to an ignition problem.
The overheating started after about 5 years from when I bought the car new making a trip to LV and lasted until I overheated and locked the motor locked up (about 6 years ago). That's about 7 years of bhg driving.
The ignition problem happened just after the warrenty was over. But Toyota replaced the distrubuter for free. It left me stranded in the fast lane on the freeway.
I've had the clutch slave and master cylinders leak to where I lost the clutch. But in one case I was at home leaving, and the other I managed to make it home.
The alternator has gone out once.
I've had countless batteries in the car. I didn't drive it much when it was new so the battery kept going dead.
I'm on my second set of tires, plus one. One of the front tires had to be replaced when I went up to the mountains and got something in the sidewall. That was when it was new. That tire was an odd ball because the factory tires had 7 grooves, the regular Goodyear VR's had 5 grooves. So I had the Goodyear place put the 5 groove one on. The tires lasted about 50k miles.
I've got 2 door ding on the right side and a scratch on the rear window when a 50 lb glass aquarium with gravel bounced off the rear window from the garage rafters during the Nortridge earthquake. The corner of the aquarium actually hit the rear window wiper which hit the rear window. The aquarium bounced off the glass and fell next to the driver's rear tire shattering, but never touching the body. I still can't believe it.
The car needs new paint. (I don't see how you guys keep the paint up.)
I've had the car new since Nov 1987. It has about 80k miles on the body. During its mid life the Supra has been on several 700+ mile trips without any problems (except the one LV trip).

I'd say in the 18 years I've had it, other than the bhg problem, its been extremely reliable. Its certainly been a joy to drive.

(Sorry to be so long winded. I though I'd qualify my answer.)

The last mkIII I had (for about.... 1 month and a half) stranded me..... atleast 3 times, all but one were atleast 45 mins away from home, and were all because of some STUPID little thing... blown fuses or something of the like. The car ran super rich though, so it also had a hard time starting every so often (but I trained my GF to pull the EFI fuse for me... :biglaugh: ) I think I blew 3 boost hoses, the bottom one twice.... and lower IC once....

And that time the security armed itself and I didn't even know my car had it.... so I couldn't start it for anything.... wouldn't pull start (o yes, we tried).... then I get home and MDC says "Dude, lock and unlock the drivers door from the outside"..... stupidest thing ever, but it actually fixes it.... I friggin hated that.

Anyway, my newest mkIII seems to be pretty good, after I get this stupid steering rack done I'll see.

MKII's are so reliable..... I'd take anything with a 5/6m anywhere, no matter how much oil they leaked.

mkiii's are only as reliabe as the person taking care of them. period.

my previous 89' turbo was my dd and took regular weekend trips to the beach in rhode island and various other state to state road trips.

the only thing that ever went wrong was the ORIGINAL lower radiator hose pooped one night when i was about 2-3 miles from home. pulled over, realized that was what happened, turned the heat on full blast, popped the hood but didn't open it, ran every red light... cautiously... (if there is such a thing) and FLEW home, lmao.
that was proabaly the only thing i over looked on the car.

fyi, if you have to change this hose, buy a stock one directly from toyota. period. napa and all other places hoses don't fit. trust me.

lmao. ct, you are so god damn right...
my friend bought one from autozone. we had to trim that bastard like 3 or 4 times just so it would fit "OK"... it was terrible...

i only really drove my car around locally... i took it to maine once (3 hours) and vermont once for a day trip/cruise (12 hours)

the only thing that's ever really gone wrong is when i was in vermont, my check engine light popped on, giving me like 3 different codes... but then went away after i cleared it, never to return... aaand i got a flat.. and forgot my spare... 3 cans of tire sealant, and about $5 worth of air, and i got home safely :D

Well said!

It's like anything else you get out what you put in. My na>t is reliable as a stone but...I did the motor right and I don't skrimp on the parts (no cheap shit). Also I put the time in maintaining and upgrading this car. I've touched every nut and bolt.

Ever since I took out the 7M I havent had a worry in the world. No blips, burps or no starts or leaks or anything. Just runs and not an issue from it.
