Ok, look, Im TRYIN not to be hard on this particular member, but we've bumped horns a little bit in the for sale section, and now, the guy is selling some pistons that his "brother" told him have been shaved down, so now they arent the stock 8.5:1 but now are 8.2:1... I've never heard of anyone or any shops doing this to stock pistons, so, please someone, educate me...

Do they do it? Is it safe? Can you do it? Why would you do it?

Thanks,
Jake

The only pistons that you mill the top of, are pistons that are sold new with unfinished domes. No one makes unfinished dome pistons for the 7m. Pistons like that are sold to expert engine shops that will machine their own dome profile. It is possible to do this to the 7m piston, but they would be worthless after the fact due to wrecking the squish band, and flame travel pattern

Ok, look guys, Im not tryin to make this thread about any members, Im tryin to determine if it's possible, logical, acceptible to change the compression of a stock piston by shaving it or in another form altering it...

I have my own reservations about said member, however, this is something Im genuinely curious about, because I've never heard of it...

Rich, I know about what you're saying, Ive heard of them doing that with raw stock unfinished domes...

i've been through the shaved piston trick with a mates 1.5jz

it was the WORSE thing you could ever do

it does affect the structual integrity... .severly
this motor detonated lightly and what do ya know... engine started rattling and rattling, finally tore it down and hello... cracked je pistons

shaved pistons = no go

they do shave pistons. a common mod for the nissan z guys is to use the l28d crank which is the 2.8l diesel crank(longer stroke then the std l28 crank), the l24 (240z) rods which are longer, and ka24d pistons(flat top stock) that have 1mm shaved from the top as they have a higher wrist pin height to match the longer rods. this with a 85mm bore makes a 3.1l engine and fairly high compression iirc. i was gonna build a high com 3.1 stroker for my friend for his 71z, but the body was too far gone and he scrapped it. we had all the parts including forged pistons that had already been shaved. he sold it all like an idiot. oh well.

edit: btw, im not saying his pistons are shaved, just saying it is done.
