Do shocks/struts change the ride height?

I am in the midst of a debate over whether or not a shock absorber will change the ride height of a vehicle and would appreciate input from the Supra community. Please if possible support your response i.e. SEMA reports, engineering articles, manufacturer statements etc.

The basic statement is this; springs support the vehicle weight and shocks/struts absorb the "shock" from irregularities in the road.

A shock is really a damper, not a shock absorber. It controls spring oscillation. Stiffer shocks, less body roll. Softer shocks, more body roll against the spring.

The only way a shock would change ride height is if the spring perch welded to it was lower than stock.

Depends. Most pressurized dampeners will affect ride height somewhat simply because they're pressurized (i.e. if you're replacing one that's so blown all the fluid is leaking out of it).

Depends on the Shock. factory replacement shocks? No

Aftermarket shocks? Depends. Bilsteins are 3 way height adjustable.
