Do I need this wire on the back of the alternator?

Do I need this wire on the back of the alternator? On my new alternator, the stud is too short.

It's a suppressor just buy a new one they're cheap, that ones a failure waiting to happen with the brittle insulation..

Not running that wire. No radio static so far. And yes the wire was brittle in about 3 places.

It is a condenser for, as stated, noise suppression. Alternator whine to be exact. The lead wire needs to be as short as possible which is why the part is always placed on the rear of the alternator.

funny im re wiring my engine harness and knoticed mine is all beat to hell too and was wondering if i needed it aswell

Just don't do what the OP wanted and make a new "ground wire". The result would not be pleasant...

what if you just repair the wire??? what would you tell the part store you need if you went to buy one new??
