this is an exhaust manifold gasket from eristic. it was riveted together at one point, but one of the rivets fell out before i even opened the box. the gasket was able to pivot around and just didnt seem secure with the 1 remaining rivet, so i separated them. i am wondering if i can get away with using only one of the gaskets?

just place both halfs on the studs as normal, the rivets just hold them togther, so just stack them.

The exhaust manifold gasket is one of the gaskets you will want to buy from Toyota. Much higher quality.

Spray both sides of both pieces down with copper gasket coat and put them on. Torque the manifold down, and retorque after a heat cycle or two.

Toyota wants $45 for the exh mani gasket. I paid $45 for the entire head gasket kit that this 2 piece gasket came from. Still, I am thinking about buying the Toyota gasket. Taking the hot side apart ain't fun, so I'd rather have the right thing on the first try. I kind of don't like this dual gasket design. Seems weird to me.

i liked taking apart the cold side better. i didnt have to get under the car.

anyway, im leaning towards the toyota gasket. hopefully i wont have to take anything apart afterward!

most exaust gaskets are dual layer. this is casue the aluminum head and the cast manifold heat and expand at diff temps. this helps prevent exaust leaks. your call, but the toyota gasket is gonna be 2 layers rivited togther.

hmm really? the one i pulled off when i tore down the motor is waaay thinner than this, and i cant discern multiple layers. additionally, it has holes where the rivets in this double gasket were, but the holes are empty.

awesome i was trying to find a photo of a felpro. looks pretty similar to this eristic gasket.

ok, ill give it a shot. copper spray both sides and then hang it on the studs. hopefully that will compensate for the missing rivets.

and no, i did not use the head gasket, nor the EGR cooler gasket, nor the throttle body gasket, nor the turbo oil return line at the block. used OEM toyota parts for those 4.

Not sure about the OEM Toyota exhaust gaskets, but most exhaust gaskets are made of a single or multi-layer perforated steel with a cardboard interior. With these types of gaskets, one usually needs to retorque multiple times after a few heat cycles to ensure a proper seal...on top of that, you run a high chance of burning the gasket out over time, especially if the bolts/nuts back out. Remflex gaskets are designed to not have to worry about any of that...they're made of a thick graphite material that crushes/compresses when you torque it down. They're especially helpful if you have a warped flange anywhere, which is why I bought them for my truck. But, since I've used them I've never had to retorque and haven't had to replace a gasket on a properly-installed application.

I know OEM Toyota is the way to go on a lot of things, but if there's a quality and proven aftermarket product that goes for the same price as OEM....guess which way I'm going. But that's just me. At least keep an open mind and check them out.
