Are the distributors all the same for the '86-'92 Supra NA? Would I be able to get one from a pre'89 motor and put it on a '89 and up motor?

In the Haynes repair manual, it says that these distributors can't be rebuilt.

On the '88 and before models however the distributor driven gear (the little gear at the end of the distributor once you take it out) can be replaced, but on the '89 and later non-turbo distributor unit nothing can be replaced..

I asked this question because the local Toyota dealer has one for like $326 and a rebuilt one from a local autopart store is $216. I thought maybe I can get one from at the nearby salvage yard from a lot cheaper and just make sure it is in good shape. I tend to see a lot more pre '89 than '89 and up models there.

Well thanks in advance.

I thought so too, but I am kind of depending on the manual for accurancy. I am wishing that it all wouldn't matter.:icon_bigg

parts people go by part numbers, the slightest etching that would make toyota issue a different part number would make the parts guy say that they are different. Sometimes We wish toyota would give us specs and certain information on parts, but at last they never do it all depends on the parts guy if they are very knowledgable and have been there a long time. As for the rotor of the distributor they are way different and I believe the plug number changed....don't quote me on that. I would check for you but I am on vaca at the moment.

I guess I will call up the nearby Toyota dealer tomorrow and ask them if there are differences.

And also maybe if I see a few '89 and up model I could just buy the unit from that.

Thanks for the quick responses.

You want to give us some $ for our distributors? :icon_bigg

Some of us don't have the $ on hand to just get a new one just like that, so for the meantime if we can just get a good used one then we will.

dude...., theyr'e 15 bucks. Stop drinking cokes and eating out of the vending machines at work and I bet in a week you will be able to afford the entire unit.

Don't get me wrong..., mad respect to anyone that wants to do this type of thng. It's what hot rodding is all about.

I don't like vending food and soft drinks. They are too pricy and I could get more elsewhere for the same price.:biglaugh: I like water better anyways.

So what you are saying is that the distributor unit that Toyota want to sell to me for $326 is only $15?! Where at man? Let me know.

I tried NAPA and they want $170 with an exchange.

That is disgusting. Sounding bitter there. Maybe you need to get to Costco to get some sweet for all I give a soft drink.
