Dipstick and gasket questions.

1. I'm reassembling and my oil dipstick tube doesn't line up right with the tube that's in the block, it comes up about a half inch short. Any suggestions to fix this?
2. Oil pan gasket: I have a cork gasket that came in my kit. Would I be better off to go with FIPG/RTV? Or will the cork gasket be fine and if so, would I want to use a sealant with it?
3. valve covers: Do I want to use a sealant with those gaskets, or are they fine with just the seals?
I think that's it. The motor is just about ready to drop in. So hopefully, these are my last questions. Thanks in advance.

1. Bend the dip stick to fit correctly, I have had to o this many times, sometimes someone, or something bends it and you didn't know.

2. Do not use the cork gasket. it is no good and you will get leaks. Use FIPG or what I use is " Right Stuff " from Permatex. I just used it to seal my 1JZ oil pan today.

3. Go to Advance Auto and buy Felpro valve cover gaskets, I wouldn't use a sealant around these. I use Flepro gaskets on the intake manifold and the valve cover's and have had no issues. The Ebay Kits come with Crappy gaskets and you may not have those, but be aware. Anything Toyota makes will also be a good choice.

Good luck.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the TSRM specified using a sealant in a couple of places on the valve cover gaskets.

Edit: Went back and checked, and it calls for a sealant (FIPG probably) on both sides of each cam-rise at the front of the valve cover to prevent oil leaks there.

Thanks for all that. I def don't trust cork gaskets, lol, so I was already leaning towards RTV (aka Right Stuff). I also have the valve cover gaskets already, they came in my rebuild kit. Hopefully, these are my last questions until I get it running.

My experience with rebuild kit valve cover gaskets, has been good so far. If I had the money though, I would have gone for the Toyota parts.

It does.

Pics of the dipstick issue?
I'll have a pic up a little later.
Thanks for the info on the valve covers, I checked the TSRM once and I must have missed that.
And RTV will work for the oil pan right?
Thanks.

RTV, as in FIPG, or Permatex The Right Stuff, yes. anything less, well, is just less.

Yeah, I pretty much use RTV and Right Stuff interchangeably since not other option comes to mind besides Permatex or FIPG.

I wouldnt bend the dipstick tube, you might end up with leaks, as there is only an o ring that sits inside the little boss in the lower part, and if the angle is off the oring might not be touching. My guess is someone pressed the dipstick tube (lower section) too far down into the block. Thats easily fixed by driving it back out a little Wouldnt hurt to coat some RTV on the side of the lower dipstick tube and then drive it into the block.

I used grey permatex on the oil pan - no leaks. Previous build with red permatex had a little leaking issue. Also check bolt holes rear because they aren't blind and I had the permatex with the bolt push so hard it started cracks on the oil seal holder that I noticed on the last rebuild and had to replace.

Dealer valve cover gasket and make sure to do something about those 4 (of so) leaking oil plugs in the center. Look for the napa solution or dealer the center cover (pricey)
