Digi dash causing transmission shifting problems? Possible?

Hi Guys

So to add to my long list of problems , the transmission is screwed. Its been this way ever since Ive done my rebuild( but shifted fine before the rebuild).Any way when in D , it will select 3rd gear when taking off, so to take off I have to manually select L.

Also when in L gear , it somehow drops down a gear at random times and the revs rise extremely sharply because of the drop in gear ( so L is obviously not selecting gear 1) . This is extremely dangerous if the car has dropped down a gear unexpectedly in the rain , causing the revs to rise , tyres to spin - and me to lose control. So to drive I have to take off in L and then change to 2 as soon as I can. It holds and drives in 2.

Anyway I have an r154 on the way getting installed at the start of next year. I also have digi dash issues ( speedo not working fuel sender gauge not working ) and stumbled across a page that inferred that a faulty digi dash was the cause of un drivable transmission shifting.

Specifically he said this

" Installation back into the vehicle revealed that I may need to go back and disassemble the speedometer unit ... If the cluster assembly did not sit just sweetly against the mounting points, i.e. if tightening the fixing screws applied any bending pressure across the unit at all, it exhibited total operational failure (including undrivable transmission shifting - limp home mode?). I found I had to do the final mounting with the ignition switched on. "

Is this possible , or true? Have you guys heard this before? I would love if an analogue conversion would at least fix my shift problem for now until the r154 comes in however it comes as a surprise that a display can cause such a monumental transmission problem

after searching i found this

Symptoms
Bouncing or completely non-functional speedometer needle.

Other symptoms of a bouncing speedometer:
erratic cruise control
erratic shifting (A/T only)

Other symptoms of a dead speedometer:
non-functional odometer and trip meter
non-functional cruise control
torque converter will not lock (A/T only)
blinking O/D Off light (A/T only)

these are my exact symptoms. Seems like my speedo cable is screwed.

this is the link o replacing the speedometer cable

www.SUPRAS.com - Member's Section

any advice on where I can pick up the 3 parts of the speedo cable?

ve heard that cables like the ones used on some holdens fit the mk3's

Gauges & Speedo Parts :: Speedo Cable Holden FX-HG Torana HB-LJ to Toyota Box - Vic Performance Parts

would something like this suffice?

oh and does anyone have the specific part numbers for each part of the speedo cable

edit : gave toyota a call , apparently non of the aus delivered models came with a digi dash , they only have the cable for the analogue dash....

Finding info on the digi dash is tough. They were only made for RHD vehicles, which really limits the numbers right out of the factory. Most of the members are from the USA, where it was never available - hell, the vast majority of the users here have only seen pictures of one at best.
