I have an 90 NA targa, No tems
with a mostly stock 1jz swapped in.

I took the car out for a drive today afternoon. dry sunny weather.
I tested it hard. In second gear the rear wanted to go side ways.

I want to know, how do you know what differential (3.73,3.91, 4.10, 4.30 or ???) you have on the car?

thanks

if its the stock differential you have the 4.30 in there...

the 3.73 is the 87-88 and EARLY 89 turbos...the 3.93 is the late 89-92 turbos and the 4.10 is the jza70 LSD...

id like to add that im assuming you actually have a differential... if you dont have TEMS in a NA...you might not have the sports package....

I'm gonna have to post a big WTF for that post Ideal.

The 87-88 Turbos had the 3.91:1, the 89-92 Turbos had 3.73:1. All N/A's had 4.30:1, and JZA70's had 4.10:1.

There was never a 3.93 in a Supra, you had the years reversed, and definitely all Supras have a differential, lol!!!

I'm assuming you meant LSD in the last line there... but wow... lol.

Check your data tag in the door jam, it will have a diff code on there.

G305 for 89-92 Turbos (3.73:1 with LSD)
G315 for 87-88 Turbos (3.91:1 with LSD)
G282 for 89-92 N/A (4.30:1 no LSD)
G284 for 86-88 N/A's (4.30:1 no LSD)
G285 for 86-92 N/A's (4.30:1 with LSD)

If you have an NA stick with the 4.30 gears. If you are actualy having traction issues, just swaping in an LSD pumpkin.

Do not swap in the 3.91 or 3.73, you will lose speed.

So I've been wanting to go to the junkyard and get a 4.30 lsd pumpkin for my 91 turbo. So all i have to do to make sure it has lsd is check for "G285"? Where can i find this number stamped on the diff?

technically he would lose acceleration and gain speed.... semantics i know....

But it's a 1jz

Personally I would go with a 4.30, that way you still have decent acceleration even though you lose the low end grunt of the 7M, plus you rev higher with the 1jz so you still maintain a similar top speed. The 3.91 gear will be closer to the 4.10 that came with the 1jz in Japan, but you lose a little in the acceleration department. Your choice.

The average NA isnt going to have the power to take advantage of that higher top end.

Ok im confused now, I thought The Turbos came with LSD also?
I have an NA 87 and it has every option that toyota offered, I know I have LSD, but thought that sence the Turbo cars are better that they would have definatly come with LSD stock.

He has a 1JZ, not a 7M-GE...

I didn't include the LSD in the descriptions because all Turbos have LSD, I only included it for N/A's because some do and some don't.

If you don't have a LSD type differential only one tire receives power under acceleration. If you break traction only one tire will spin. So you only get 1/2 the traction. If you have a LSD type differential both tires will receive power under acceleration. If you break traction both tires will spin. So yes a LSD differential is far superior to one without LSD.

I think it's something you find in the VIN number.

Check the tag on the firewall, you can't miss it.
