how many different gear ratio's are there ?

the 3.91 , 4.3 ??

what years came with what gear sizes ?

an what differences would it make if you put a different differential in your car other than the differential that it came with ? etc ....

would someone school me a bit on the subject ?

3.73, 3.91, 4.10 (I think), and 4.30 as far as I know. I heard you can use some differential ratios from Toyota trucks too, lol.

My 86.5 n/a came with a 4.55 lsd. There is a plate in the engine bay with codes for the rear end. Mine was G255, I am switching to the 3.9 lsd though.

The number you're looking for is the one in the "A" category.[/QUOTE

Toyota Differential Codes

The following is a table of Toyota differential codes. These codes are applicable to all Toyota models and years. You will find this code on the VIN plate in your car, typically on the firewall.

The code is comprised of four digits. The first digit is a letter that represents the ring gear diameter. The second and third digits are numbers that represent the differential ratio (Number of driveshaft rotations for each axel rotation). Lastly the fourth digit is also a number that represents the number of pinion gears and whether or not the unit is equipped with limited slip.

Examples
T382 = 6.7" Ring Gear @ 3.417:1 ratio, 2 pinions w/o LSD
F293 = 7.5" Ring Gear @ 4.10:1 ratio, 2 pinions w/ LSD
F303 = 7.5" Ring Gear @ 3.727:1 ratio, 2 pinions w/ LSD

Differential Codes

Theres another in the door jam iirc.

It's not hard to see the LSD sticker if you have one. Look under the back of the car, big red sticker on the pumpkin with white writing. It might be dirty/hard to see, the first time I looked I didn't see it.

Didn't the 1G cars come with lower than 4.30?

Always forget about that one

Your axle code reads "G285"

G = 8"
28 = 4.30
5 = lsd

Yeah, sorry I know how to read, it says G255. It comes out to be a 8" lsd with a 4.556:1 ratio.

The picture of the tag was a quote, just for a reference.
