I have an ssqv (hks) at the moment, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to ditch it for a synapse synchronic.

...and operation should be all that you're concerned about when purchasing a BOV. Not sound.

You won't be disappointed with synapse then :)

Blitz DD SS bov here (not jdm one)....
I do not get any surge at all :biglaugh:
It is located 15cm before the throttle body.
It makes the best sound...:biglaugh:

Surging is a quite complex thing....
It depends on the turbo/turbos,on the IC piping diameter/routing,on the
kind of the bov and it's location, and ofcaurse the boost pressure :sarcasm:

A bov alone can't be the main issue on surging problems......

I had the same Blitz DD ss bov on my old 7M with a moded CT26 60-1 P-trim turbo and
I had some surge....even with the stock CT26 I had a little...
Now with my 2jzgte (stock twins) setup and the same blitz bov located before the TB
I do not have any surge at all !

well you still didnt explain what surge damages and how, i have the hks ssbv and and higher boost its a pssssssss and at lover boost its a ch ch ch ch ch, i always thought that it happens because the hks has two valves, and one is for higher boost and one is for lower boost. also if it is bad how come i hear it on pro race cars?

Basically, when the butterfly valve in your throttle body closes, pressure is built up because the turbo is still spinning. This pressure is released via the blow off valve.

...if the valve takes to long to open (due to a number of different reasons, like spring adjustment), that pressure has nowhere to go except to "surge" back into the turbo and can cause the impellers in the turbo to spin backwards...

...which is bad.

I've never worked on any pro class cars, but I would assume that you hear it because they have the tendency to rebuild their motors every few passes and aren't really concerned about it.

Turbo does NOT spin backwards, EVER!

Pro cars don't run BOV's as they can afford to replace the turbo every race and it increases boost response.

What you're hearing is cavitation, and it's putting forces on the wheel and shaft that will eventually lead to failure. Low boost surge isn't nearly as bad as high boost surge (this is obvious), but it's up to you if you want to fix it.

I run a knock-of HKS Racing Type II (it's no longer made), and it surges at low boost, but isn't ricey at high boost. I can't make it blow off easy like you can with a SSQV...

Every pro car I've been around runs a BOV. The most common one I've seen is the HKS racing like yourself on them.

...and I do stand corrected on the turbo spinning backwards thing. That's just the way my motor tech described it.

Rally cars down run BOV's, and I've seen several race cars without them.

It's a tradeoff... but on a street car, use a BOV...

Prof SheepDog. These are like, rare er something lol. I got mine of a member who IIRC got it off shaeff.

I have one of these too. it's not currently on my car but i remember likin the sound of it when it was, and it worked well. I got an HKS SQV, and set the Sheepdog bov aside.

Running without a BOV is like regularly having sex with hookers without using a rubber.

...eventually something bad is going to happen, it's just a matter of when.
