I highly doubt toyota would do that, and I seriously doubt she is original owner, if she says no one has ever touched the car.

I'll willing to put money on that she is either not the original owner, or she's lying to invoke this exact reaction from you. It wouldn't be the first time someone has cooked up a cock and bull story to try and sell their car.

I also find the fact that it's taken her 21 years to realize the car is too fast for her pretty damn funny.

Toyota has been known to screw up, at least in Japan to here lol. I doubt they messed up the pre 89 & 89+ thing tho. My mums supra "body" is a 2.5ttr with the ttr interior finishings without the actual seats & center bits on the doors etc. It had the badging all round, open the bonnet and low n behold theres a damned 1G, we were gonna flick off the 2.5 for some cash and build the 7m to go in, we still sold the 1G tho :D

edit: The car is registered as a 2.5 twin turbo, the vin plate actually has GA70 1GGTE instead of the 2.5.. stupid people at car yards or whatever, obviously don't look at vin tags, only badges lol.

Or the stupid people changed the badges to get more money for a lesser car as an export model.

knew a guy that put 4x4 badges on his truck and traded it in at a dealership...

they never looked to see that it wasn't really a 4x4....but gave him a trade in value of a 4x4

People can change their minds whenever they want - regarding the lady deciding it was a gas hog and too fast for her. Gas is much more expensive now then when she bought it. She could have made that decision months or years ago but is too lazy to do anything about it. Same thing with it being too fast.

On the wheels and climate control - maybe her husband or whomever fixed the car for her changed them?

Many simple explanations are possible, really.
