not to start an argument (maybe a discussion) was the copper coating at fault, as in it actually caused your hg to blow? Or was it poor machining? Just curious, again not to start an argument, more for info for the next time.

The only reason it would not work is if you didnt torque the head down enough...some people torque to 80lbs....I torqed mine to 95+++lbs. My head was milled perfectly...looked like mirror as with the block as well....they cut with diamond at the machine shop I used...where most cut with metal blades.

If you do it right, the copper gasket will only help.....if you do it wrong....well you know

thats just plain wrong...

the copper sealant HAS THE POSSIBILITY of damaging ANY engine its used in.... sometimes it works fine others you will have results such as a bhg again from it clogging things....

my machine work was perfect...i wasnt settling for anything less...and it was most certainly not the cause of the hg blowing....

Now I have not done any tests on my own, and I have no experience of my own (I always like to state my basis/source for thinking), but from reading this one long thread in SF and all the responses that came about, it seemed that if a new gasket was to be used [which would have a coating on it already, if it is a Cometic anyways], it would be best to just put it on as the gasket comes and with its own coating from the company.

As for what Adjuster is saying about the way he specifically does it, I can't doubt what he says, but to me I sometimes feel as if I should look for a procedure that has many proven cases and a high success ratio as well. I would say that his way has a high success ratio of 100%. I really want to do what he says and am not sure I won't take his advice when I do actually do it. He also has his own way of NOT using some engine gaskets, but using FIPG/The Right Stuff instead. His HG procedure is working for him, but I have never heard of anyone else doing things the same way he does, and that makes me not want to be a pioneer as well, but chicken out and go down the beaten path, which is the following paragraph.

I would think that the most universally recommended and proven way so far is:
Using a new gasket (with only the coating that comes on it already)
A Cometic (most proven HG)
An RA of less than 50 (what Cometic recommends)
80-90 FT/LBs of torque WITH the moly lube (not motor oil, oil needs a much higher torque for the same equivalence). See *Note* below.

As I said, I am not sure I won't do Adjuster's procedure, it does seem very convincing, and I have been reading how he does it for quite some time. Also keep an open mind that in general, the most universally performed methods (one example of which would be my last paragraph) is not necessarily the absolute best method in many procedures.

Just what I have come up so far on all this.

*Note* I have heard a machinist tell me that if you over tighten the head bolts, you can raise the threads of the block or the edges of the bolt holes. This has also been mentioned by another well regarded member as well. I don't know when (at what torque) that effect will actually start to happen though.

Adjuster:
what did you spray your headgasket with?

i believe what i'm going to do is put a new mhg on with some type of light, read *light*, coating on the gasket to seal block imperfections, if found.
if serious, i will be heading into a rebuild. which i'm pretty OK with at this point. i want ZERO problems and some fun, so i think i'm putting JE .030's in with some shot peened rods. knife edge the crank. have some fun with it. i'll have a garage to store the car in so i wont feel bad leaving it out in the weather. it may be down for a long time. i'll probably look for a n/a to drive in the meantime and alleviate my supra cravings, somewhat anyway.. i suppose i'm getting too deep into it right now... i'll let you guys know what i find when i pull the head off.
