If I had to "guess" where the Oil is going I'd say out pass the rings under boost.

We see our motors as a big ridged solid chunk of cast iron but in reality they're very flexible and move around a lot more than you'd expect.

Downside of doubling, tripling, quadrupling a motor's output will be this movement and warping of the bores and main bearing saddles.

When the bores warp the rings unseat and there goes the Oil, when the main saddles flex you get bizarre wear patterns on the Mains and I'll just about put money on this in your motor Mike!

When you do a static comp test you'll get good even figures as long as there's no mechanical damage.

well, the motor runs fine and i'm glad there in no mechanical damage. i can live with my motor eating a little bit of oil. i'm just wondering if i losing performance do to this

Probably some but then again so is everyone else once they get to these sort of levels!

Oil is cheap ;)

Have a look at the Oil consumption of a 600hp Nascar type motor over a full race or one of our V8 Bathurst cars that do 1000 km's in the race and you'd be surprised at just how much they use!

If you're really concerned do a leakdown test that will tell you the condition of the motor better than a comp test.

before my hg went, i had numbers in the 175-180 region on a 190k mile motor.. probably why it blew... shoulda done a runrite on it or something

I'd just keep on top of it Mike.
Do a leakdown as Ian mentioned, and replace your rear main seal, figure out the valvecover seals leakage issue, and I'd be fine with it.

Just look at it like a fresh oil circulation mod. Keeps fresh oil in the crankcase since you have to keep adding it. ;)

How "loose" is your setup?

I would like to add to that. Normal 4 cycle internal combustion engines burn oil during normal use. They are designed that way.

yea, i know about carbon build-up causing hot-spots and leading to pre-ignition.

that is why i seafoam the piston tops every 4 months :)

plus with my methanol injection, the motor is getting steam-cleaned all the time

Hey Mike, what piston rings are you using? I have a freind that was using Ross piston rings and his engine was burning oil for a long time. I beleive he told me that he called Ross and they said the piston rings take thousands of miles before they fully seal. Either way, I wouldn't worry about it too much, since you have a strong engine with good compression.

hey matt, i am running that setup. i have never heard that before... maybe i just need to run it harder :)

i'll give ROSS a call

thanks
