Why would you throw out hard drives? They're actually pretty stable storage devices to keep around as long as they're stored correctly (compared to burned CD's at least).

If they're SATA, set up a raid array for fun.

most of them are of the 4 and 8 gig variety. the two bigger ones were the issue with those computers both of those were satas and of the laptop variety.

what the hell is a raid array? you have peaked my interest

I was thinking more along the lines of making them one big drive, it lowers access time and it's very fast for doing cool stuff (like loading games, video editing, ect). The issues with that setup is that if one drive dies you're screwed, that's why I'd copy a file to the RAID to work with then copy back.

No different to losing your data on a single drive if you haven't backed up, either way it's gone.

modern drives have pretty good MTBF if you don't buy the cheapest drives on the market, been running RAID0 here for a decade and have never lost data. (I back it up anyway)

Open up the drives, pull the platters out, stack them side-by-side in a large firepit, put copious amounts of Thermite on top of each platter, add burning magnesium from a firestarter, step back, grab the marshmallows and coat hangers, bend the coat hangers into metal spits, stab the mallows onto the spits, roast them for a few seconds in the bright heat/light, carefully pull off and consume marshmallows, and ignore the bitter, acrid, metal taste from the burning Thermite.

(NOTE: marshmallow step completely optional, and inherently dangerous. Use only as directed.)

no i think instead of pulling the platters i will properly perforate the cases at a distance of 100yds or more, then burn as directed,- the thermite using diesel instead, and mmm marshmallows

i was thinking more of a down range perforation with a 7.62 caliber round multiple times
where is the fun in nails?

Not all of us own firearms, some of us live in crowded neighborhoods :)

Although, I do agree that it'd be fun .. but, probably not when my next door neighbor is a police officer..

BTW I'm looking for a new setup, looking for some 1tb drives, anyone have any suggestions?

Seagate I've been a fan of, but lately they have been having issues, always had WD and never had one die on me so.

Running a seagate 1tb raid right now for almost a year no issues. In fact, the only drives I had fail on me before were WD and Maxtors ..

I've had 2 maxtors fail, just on work machines and not on mine, I won't buy them.

ALL HDD's fail, especially if they're not properly mounted and cooled. Maxtor was bought out years ago, they're no longer "real" Maxtors.

Yep, but I run coolers on all my drives. I know and see what heat does to them...
