Go with the aftermarket one before the stock... a head shave isn't a bad idea. It's completely up to you with what you decide to do... It's not as if the engine was turbo... so its not all that much of a big deal. You aren't trying to hold any sort of boost is all I am saying, so it won't really make a lot of a difference... but you at least want it to work efficiently... so do everything that you can do. Shaving a stock headgasket can be tedious work, and may not work as well as an aftermarket one, so don't go that route. I hope whatever you do works out well for you.
I got a stock toyota HG here and i was always told that i HAD to atleast shave the head before i put it back together. I dont wanna go all out with the whole $1,000 in a MHG, head and block work. I'm N/A and its my DD......So what should i do ?
Simple. Do the quickest and most inexpensive fix that you can do. Shave the head, get the new stock HG on there... and it will last just as long as the one that blew on you if you do it all right.
Well, the HG i just blew came out of the JDM engine i baught almost a year ago w/o a retorque. My old engine's HG blew because it overheated and melted pistons after a retorque. Go figure.
