here is a quick break down
3.73 gears 26" tire
55 mph= 2650 rpm
65 mph= 3150 rpm
75 mph= 3600 rpm
100 mph= 4800 rpm
3.11 gears 26" tire
55 mph= 2200 rpm
65 mph= 2600 rpm
75 mph= 3000 rpm
100 mph= 4025 rpm
3.51 gears 26" tire
55 mph= 2500 rpm
65 mph= 2925 rpm
75 mph= 3400 rpm
100 mph= 4550 rpm
i don't know that i would want to go as low as 3.11. that will hurt performance in a big way. in both spool and accel. a 3.5x gear really doesn't show itself until the higher speeds. down low it is fairly comparable. at highway speed you will see a couple hundred rpm difference. if you ran a 27" tire w/ the 3.51 gears it would help knock off another 100-200 rpm at 75-100mph.
also keep in mind the converter will play some role in rpm as well. a really loose converter (high stall) will typically have slightly higher rpm than a tighter one.
and jeff, i DO work on my car! well, atleast when the stars are aligned.
