Dead dimmer switch is the number one cause.

EDIT:

Well, I was trying to find an old post of mine on SF.... Anyway, you can bypass the dimmer for the time being. There are three wires running to it. One provides a ground, one provides 12v and the third goes to the cluster. Disconnect the plug from the dimmer and jump the ground line to the one going to the cluster..... that'll give you the full brightness.

If you absolutely need I'll dig out my copy of the '88 TEWD and look up the wire colors, but it's pretty simple. just don't short the 12v and ground lines, you'll blow a fuse at best. If you jump the 12v line to the cluster line the dash lights will just remain off.

EDIT 2:

That's it, I've gotta make a writeup on both how to bypass it and how to repair one. Just so happens I've already got a dead dimmer here I've been planning on rebuilding and beefing up..... :bigthumb:

EDIT part three:

Ok, I looked it back up. To bypass the dimmer you need to jump the White w/Black Stripe wire to the White w/Green Stripe wire. I crimped a male spade connector with it's plastic insulation jacket removed onto each end of a piece of wire and just plugged them into the harness connector for the dimmer.

If anyone feels like tearing theirs apart, here's a partial list of the components:

40KΩ - Potentiometer
150Ω - R6
3.3KΩ - R5
340MΩ - R1, R2, R3
10KΩ 1/8W - R4
33Ω - R7
.33µ 50v - C1
.47µ 50v - C2
1µ 50v - C6

I still need to identify the two transistors, the mosfet and the zenier diode. I don't really know which components burn out the most frequently. In the case of my dimmer it was R6 though.

Ok I looked at the wires. I didnt see the white w/green strip... but I did well think I found the white w/black strip. I see that the white w/black strip has a plug lookin thing on looks like its suppose to be pluged into ssomething lol :icon_bigg but its not. (the person that had the car B4 me has the wires all jacked up) I took a pick of these 2 wires I did find that looks like they need to be somewhere 1. being the white w/black strip and 2. a purple w/black they have prong like on them. I took a pic of them maby that can help with what I'm talkin aboutI'll post the pics up.

No idea at all.... Do you have a multimeter? Check to see if either of those wires supplies 12v. The one on the guage side may provide some voltage, but it should be a lot less than the 12v line. The one on the guage side is the one you want to ground.

EDIT: oh, actually do you remember which one plugged into which connector on the dimmer?

Look here: http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/Wiring/pages/Page_066.html
The Dimmer plug is the one labeled "M", It's the wires that connected to #3 and #4 that you want to jump.
