Possible. There's also three plugs in there that can leak oil. Iirc, it's the three higher ones. Can't remember if its the same ones the hold down the center cover, but I think so.

i had the same problem with the valve cover gaskets, so i threw away the phillips screws and bought new 6mm (i think) bolts with lock washers, tightened them down and never had them go loose, it seems the toyota rubber washers go hard within time and let the bolts go loose

sorry to bring this back from the dead but i got two questions. I replaced my screws and grommets with a m10 bolt at a 30mm length but when you guys say lock washers do you mean, these ones http://www.boltdepot.com/images/Chrome/chrome-split-lock-washers.jpg , or these ones http://www.boltdepot.com/images/Chrome/chrome-internal-tooth-lock-washers.jpg ? i bought the latter cause when i initially searched i though i read some where to use the ones with the teeth on the inside, but they just seem hella thin... My other question is ok i'll admit it i got a shitty torque wrench from habor freight that torques down in in/lbs. I know usually when you use a torque wrench it clicks when its there but this shit f'in sucks.... so how tight/thin should the gasket look when you tighten it down to 22 in/lbs? i though i had it snug so i backed it and have been searching since. Sorry for the noob questions but i dont wanna crack these covers and i want my car to start again so i can enjoy it some more! thanks guys.

Neither. Get the OEM washers. They're rubber with a steel cap.

Just dont go nuts. It had screwdriver head stock so put your hand on the head of the ratchet and then tighten. Prolly could do it without the ratchet.

in/lb torque wrench also wont click as loud as your thinking and its not that tight. You have to go slow and listen carefully.

Redacted per Title 18 USC Section 798
Get a torque driver. A Utica TS-30 or similar can often be had cheap from Ebay. Start with new gaskets, make sure the covers are flat, the head clean, sealant placed *only* were the book says, keep the PCV system functional, and torque check every other oil change. My covers never leaked. Do those things and yours shouldn't either.

If you can't tighten down on a screw but need to torque it and want it to stay put use Loctite 222 Purple Dot Threadlocker. It will hold the screw at the torque value you applied, won't back out, and when you want to remove it will come right out. Red Loctite folks refer too is usually Loctite 272 Permanent, that Loctite doesn't come right out, it's used for locking things like dowel pins in permanently.

Damn, I already ordered them from Toyota. The total for the bolts plus the washers is going to be forty something. :(
