So I sold those dr's, and I was taking them off my car this morning, and never noticed, but I have a cracked rear rotor! Holy shit! It must have JUST happened recently, 3 cracks though! I never noticed...

What causes a rotor to crack? And whats the danger of driving on it for a few days? Ive been wanting to buy new rotors, I guess this is a perfect reason...

Any suggestions on brakes? Anyone know anyone selling some performance brakes? I dont want stock rotors, not with my set up, I want a better set...

Also, when replacing rotors, should I replace the pads? I have fairly new pads, replaced 5 months ago, maybe 2000 miles on them... What kind of pad should I look for?

Thanks,
Jake

these are stock rotors that cracked?

meh, it happens.

do it as a set new rotors and possibly some performance brake pads..

the rear is like 30-25 percent of your braking power.. not a WHOLE lot...

a while back, my front rotors warped. im a late/hard braker so i figured i'd check 'em for cracks.... they werent cracked but i must've had them up to red hot a couple times because there were overlapping blue/purple circles, about 1.5" each, all the way around the rotor face. imagine how hot they mustve been, lol

no real help to you or your topic. but it was a story i figured i'd share.

I know Brembo makes a good rotor... Does anyone make a BBK for us?

What could cause the crack? Will burnouts crack them?

Splashing cold water will crack the best rotors in the world. Also keeping the brakes on after a particularly hard stop will either warp or crack them. Basically anything that puts quick temperature changes on them will do the trick of cracking them.

Where is it cracked? What rotors are they? Most aftermarket units are really 3rd grade quality when it comes to materials. These are unreliable since who knows who made them what materials or processes they used.

Don't drive on cracked rotors. Your life (and mine if you hit me) is worth more than a 80 dollar brand new rotor from Toyota (hint-hint).

HEY! OT: you got my email Jake?

As for the rotors, they are hair line cracks from the center out...

Now do they make BBK for our cars? Or is it a big ordeal with adapters and all that?

Horsepowerfreaks carries several big brake kits for our cars. Hit them up, but be ready to take a hit from your bank, as front is around $1500-$2000 and rears aren't far behind.

I was curious about the question shawndude asked; do you know what brand they are? I've always heard that stock toyota rotors were of excellent quality.

If they are toyota...oh well for what I heard

I have 4 for $160 shipped rotors from Ebay on my LS400. So far 120k miles on them and no problems...... :biglaugh:

Well, these are stock toyota rotors... I have a measurig tool to check thickness to the micron... But I dont think I need it, looking at them, this particular rotor looks pretty thin... When I bought the car, the previous owner had the rotors turned on the rear and the fronts replaced... *because the fronts were too thin to turn* I think some shady brake place probably just turned the rear ones antyway, even thought they should've been replaced...

Anyway, Im just gunna pick up some brembo's... I liked them alot on my NA...

Besides getting power slot or similar aftermarket rotors you can do the MKIV Rear Brake mod. http://www.speedtoys.com/~stryder/mkivbrakes.html

Jake, once you get the larger rims you can do the MK4 rears. I had them for awhile. It's basicly a bolt on affair.
