Damn did I make a mess changing LSD fluid

As I know everyone already knows, do NOT try and change the LSD oil w/o a pump. I knew this going in, and bought what I thought was a bulb pump, but when it came time to change it tonight, friggin thing didn't work worth a damn, and I already had the old oil out. Lets just say its a damn good thing I had two qts of my redline 75w-90, thought I was actaully not gonna have enough, with the rest of it winding up on the floor.... what a PITA.

As a side note, the fluid that came out didn't look so hot... There was all kinds of "metal soup" on the magnetic drain plug (actually reminded me of that gray anti-seize compund you put on sparkplugs. That and it was very dark. I think this stuff was in there waaay too long... but the car only has 60k on the clock, and I was assured it had been changed before....

Also, one question... should I have waited until no more fluid spilled out the fill hole?? I just kinda let the big gush out, then let it flow for another 2-3 seconds then closed it up. Anything bad gonna happen???

Thanks all.

I used redline in my diff before.. it "sharpens" the gears (according to a redline tech)and made them whine like crazy.... i'd NEVER run it again... it was SOOO loud

BTW this was on a BMW not a supra...

YMMV

I used royal purple which made a noticable difference on lock up. I just squeezed the bottle till it drains out of the filler hole then your full.

just jack it up, put stands on the frame, then release the jack so the diff sags back down. put a hose into the filler, run the line up behind the car and fill it with a funnel.

reminds me of the thread where the guy drained the diff without taking off the filler cap first. when he went to take the filler cap off it would budge and he ended up stripping it. lol good times

You got it, route the hose up through the wheel well. :)

... Or use a turkey baster (long plastic tube with a squeeze bulb on the end) to suck the fluid out of the bottle and transfer it to the diff. Worked for me with no mess, but man, what a stink, my garage smelled like a sewer when I emptied out the old stuff.:aigo:
If your oil in the diff was not hot, I would have let it drip for more than a few seconds.

Hose/funnel through the wheel well is 10x's easier. I'd rather drive to the store to buy the hose vs using a turkey baster I already had. Probably would take less time too.

I go to fluid pumps, 1 for large coolant size bottles and 1 for smaller oil bottles. You cant beat the ease of use when its a pump right out of the bottle.

Red Line 75W-90 does not require friction modifier additive...it is already in the formula.
If you use Red Line 75W-90NS, you will need to buy the additive.

I come from a land down under
I get the 1qt bottles with the extendable nozzle and a piece of hose up through the wheelwell, I then grab the airhose and crank the reg down to 2psi stab the bottom of the bottle and pump it in.

Takes minutes per bottle and you're done.
(Mine hold a bit over 4qts so takes for ever using gravity)

hmm. i went to the local marina and got a pump that is specifically made for gear oil bottles. (my dad used to own a boat, and had to use one to fill the inboard/outboard unit.)

pull the cap off the bottle, rip the seal off, twist on the pump, and you're good to go. great for transmissions, too, as i don't like having nasty gear oil in the car if i can help it. ;)

The pumps work great for transfer cases too(my jeep).

Dont have to worry about lifting, running hoses, holding bottles upside down or squeezing the life outa the bottle to get the last bit. Its just, a few pumps and your done ;)
