I dealt with Josh at jdm engine depot, my motor does have good compression - they provided pictures. Bearings look new, minor condesation in the can tower but that cleaned out. Had one damaged vsv and the powersteering vacuum bypass was broken. Motor doesn't include ignitor or maf which for a vvti motor is a pain(going map ecu and can use a d61 ignitor). I was pleased with the service and engine that I got from them.

I can speak for the DD crowd as well. I've daily driven Supras for about 5 years now, about 3.25 of them with NA's, and the other 1.75 with my stock-ish 1jz. However, as I say to ANYONE, owning *only* a Supra as your sole means of transportation is foolish. Not saying they're unreliable (anything but), but there is ALWAYS the chance that something catastrophic might happen. Same could be said of most any car I'm sure, but being well prepared is never a bad idea. Keep the Celica, get a second job for spare money. In fact, there is a really good thread for you to read on how to afford these cars in my sig, you should read it. ;)

Great writeup man! But my issue is that I don't really "daily drive" anywhere as I am dorming at school (and will be for another year). I will go home maybe twice a month(40 miles each way) and other than that its just city and freeway driving to the mall, subway, or whatever. So I'm not sure if keeping the celica as a beater is really worth it or feasible. Insurance with both cars is 30$ more a month than with just the supra, so I use the reasoning that that 360$ earned over the year would cover the extra gas used by the supra(lol i wish) But it should put a dent in the gas cost. Definitely when I'm out of school and have to actually "daily drive" to work then a beater is definitely needed(i would most likely just pick up another celica).

Figured you'd appreciate a little experience I've collected over the years. For what it's worth, not ONE of my Supras has been 100% reliable and never left me stranded. Fortunately, I was usually close to home. I guess it all depends on your situation. If public transport or friends are an option to get around, or you live in a densely populated area, owning only a Supra might work for you, especially if you work/school close to home or your dorm. In cases like mine, and I'm sure others, if your car leaves you stranded, you could be in serious trouble, being quite a ways from any help. For example, it's 90 MILES to the nearest town for me. I can't have my car break down on me. Could always be worse too, you could break down in UTAH...

All kidding aside, with a little more info you provided, I'm not 100% against selling the Celica. Seems like you could still get around to me.

Well ive had the celica up for sale since 1pm yesterday for 3,000$(a price i would never imagine its worth) and have gotten quite a lot of cash interest and Ive been offered like 4 s10s, wtf?.My issue is that 1:i'm not gonna sell my car to some fucking rice loving jdm fanboy to look "cool in" 2:i dont have the pink or any paperwork proving any service as my father threw it all away on accident, 3:MUST get 3k out of everything or else ill just put a tarp over it and park it once the supra is up and running. So needless to say, the celica sellin is a bit of a longshot. But that allows me to slowly accumulate mk3 parts and when the blue car sells i can pick up the vvti engine :)

te72 were all these stranding issues engine or suspension related?or both? As the car the 2jz is going into has 270k+ on it, the engine im sure will be bullet proof, but everything else may be not be, my celica has 299k on the OEM suspension(except struts) and is still awesome, so im wondering if the supra is the same?

Well let's see... had water pumps fail on two cars, belts fail on at least one, head gaskets go on two, coolant pipes/hoses bust on two, etc... they're pretty solid cars overall, but nothing is bullet proof. ;)

So would you say it's more or less just proper maintenance? Because it seems like all those (even the hg with a 7m) is proper maintenance.

Pretty much, yeah. I've always been of the opinion that if it isn't broken or dangerous, try not to tinker with it. ;)

I DD my 2jzgte mk3. Overall its a fine DD. Im running an open DP on the stock twins so its kinda loud. Except for that, the down low power is great(if you dont put your car in TTC or go single) and if your banging gears all the time, you will get decent MPG's. Just keep it well maintained
