I am about to build another head for my motor, and don't want to overlook anything.
What have you done to your head, and was it worth it...
Obviously new valve springs, valve job, surfacing and "cleanup" of ports are to be done. What else?
Pictures of any port work could be very helpful.

I polished up all my ports myself. I took a small amount of material out to get rid of all the casting marks, and then polished everything up with 400 grit sandpaper. It seems to help the car a bit off boost.

I bought the head already ported and polished. I haven't been able to actually see any results since I had low compression in #1 cylinders due to broken ringlands.

Here is the stock port on my spare head.

This is the new (rebuilt) head I bought.

I bought this port and polished head becuase the mechanic mis-diagnosed my low compression due to a burnt exhaust valve. He convinced me to buy this head that had been sitting in the machine shop for some years. I got it at a decent price back then. I just haven't been able to unleash its power. The exhaust side was ported as well, but pics of it looked dirty cause of the carbon build up.

no, he is getting at the intake should be a little more rough I think. I didn't work quite as hard on the intake side as I did the exhaust ;)

I cant remember if it is the intake or exhaust side but there are ridges that help the scavenging effect and if they are removed the effect that is caused is twice as much turbulance resulting in an increase of backpressure..like i said i cant remember where i read this but,if anyone has heard of this please post so i can refresh my memory and hopefully enlighten the group....If i am wrong then i say dumdass!!!!!!!!!!!!and will repeat it while looking in the mirror...

If I am correct i beleive that the dams help with creating a suction out of the head and with out them the exhaust has a harder time exiting, thus creating more backpressure and more lag on spoolup....There job was to create a more balanced exodus of the gases before the turbo to even out the pulses and create more draw on the non turboes...Hopefully this will clarify the answers you have recieved so far.......

I think reversion dams are important in a log manifold to keep the gasses going the correct direction.

I ported my head myself and you can get good results by just removing the lip under the valve seats. I also made sure the ports were slightly smaller at the airs exit than at the entrance to keep up velocity. The intake ports get smaller as the air flows towards the valves and the exhaust port gets smaller as the gasses flow out of the head. that is hard to do if you dont keep the reversion dam.

here is a link to what i did to my head. polish and port with swain tech coatings.
