cutting wires to defeat speed limiter on the 1jz

I've heard about people cutting the pink wire in the harness to get past the 180km/h limiter the 1jz ecu has built into it. Why does this work, and what are the side effects of doing it? I noticed in my harness the person before me had actually put spade connectors on both the pink wire, and the gray wire with a green stripe in it (adjacent to the pink wire), to, i assume, be able to unplug and replug them at will. Is the gray wire with the green stripe related to the speed limiter as well?

The solid light pink wire is the speed sensor.

If your 5spd, yes you can cut it.
If your auto tranny, if you disconnect that wire, your tranny won't shift.

The OBD1 1JZ-GTE does not have "limp" mode for-say. The only "limp" mode the ECU has programmed into it, is in the auto tranny ECU. If there is a failed sensor, it will shorten the shifts to very low RPMS. Other then that? None.

My car has no IAC, no VSV, no airbag, among other things. No adverse effects on performance. Hot heat, cold A/C, just short auto shifts on the auto. Still redline shift at WOT. Good for gas miledge. I average 20 city mpg (actuall tested), with 550's and a GT40.

yes i'm 5spd, so i should be alright. I've heard the cruise control won't work as well.... and what about the gray wire? I'm going to put some military style red cover switches in the dash, including for the "really fast" switch (speed limit cut) so i'm trying to find out if i need that gray wire to be off at the same time, and if so, why.

Ceramic turbos and constant boost for long periods of time = bye bye turbos.

You'll throw the turbine blades out the tail pipe before you ever get those puppies glowing like a 7M turbo.

You will also lose your progressive power steering if you have that.

I think your CEL will be on too.

Ah, good point. The ECU wont know when you hit 45mph to change the steering to manual.

I personally have a switch on my progressive steering. Its just 2 wires that goto the steering rack. I love the firm mode, but when parking in tight spaces, its nice to have full power when turning the 18in rims when stopped :naughty:

Thats a pretty good idea.. I kinda like that. Also I think cutting this wire will trigger your ABS light if you have ABS.

Why cut it? I mean how fast do you want go? Toyota put it there for safety reason. 100mph is pretty damn fast and anything above that is looking for trouble. I would never even try to hit the speed cut cuz I spent so much $$ on this swap to just blow it all up. Just my 2 cents.

....... ok I did this search because I am researching bypassing the speed cut for the 6MGE ECU I will be getting in a couple weeks. This pink wire I am supposed to "cut", is it going to or coming out of the speed control box?

I have this done, it is is the pink wire in pin 8 of Ig1. The CEL only comes on over 110, it isn't on all the time.

You'll have to forgive my electronic ignorance, but where the hell is that? LOL

Am I looking at the plug ins to the ECU or what? The 5MGE wiring harness doesn't have any pink wires going to any of the ECU plug ins. Only pink wires I know of go into the speed control box which I assume controls the cruise control and possible speed limiter on the JDM ECUs.

Sorry, that was in refference to the 1jz. Ill look up the wiring diagrams for the 5mge and find the pin and connector.

You don't have to, I was just looking for a better explanation as to where I should look... like ECU plugs or speed control plugs or what. Telling me pink wire in the harness is kinda vague :)
