Curious about trans swap.

Hello, well.. I know I am a picky bastard and right now I am just throwing out some questions here. I have a 5spd, my brother has an Auto. Well, he wants a 5spd, and I am kinda thinking twice about the 5spd. Sure, its fun and stuff.. But honestly, in all reality.. I like driving his car because of the auto.

My question that we have been wondering about.. Is that if we STRAIGHT up swap transmissions, what will need to be done.

I would need his:

  • Engine harness
  • auto trans
  • drive shaft
  • ecu

and he would need the same of mine?? We were curious about the body harness being different, because his car has a "Transmission ECU".. while mine doesn't. Can any one shed some light on this subject? Please don't ask me why I want Auto.

wait, I know I have to swap engine harness's.. that's not too much of a problem, I am asking about the body harness for the dash and the rest of the car.

Which needs to be swapped to get the auto in a 5spd car..

engine harness

engine harness + body harness??

This is actually a pretty important topic to me, because I have an auto and a 5sp, and my wife wants the 5 sp to turn auto for her, so... Im debating if I should just swap the turbo motor and all the 89+ parts over to the NA car... I dunno... What would be easier? Will have to put some thought into this...

Reign, is her car the NA or the Turbo?? she has 5spd and wants to go manual??


Any ways, My brothers car was orignally an 88 auto NA, with a jdm turbo motor dropped in. Mine is an 88 turbo 5spd.

Her's is a turbo 5sp... The other car is an NA auto... She doesnt want 5sp, she wants the auto... And seein as the car is only gunna be in the 350hp range, teh auto should hold up fine...

Reign as much as I'd like to agree with ya but the auto will only hold up for awhile... But to lengthen it that life a nice oil cooler and oil changes fairly reguraly will help quite a bit also

Syris, yeah, I wouldnt go higher than 350 with the stocker... I have a big ass tranny cooler already, so will definately help... And Im not the type to drop a beat tranny in, lol... It will definately get a full rebuild before hand...

It sounds like your wife's car is going to need a turbo auto ecu and the turbo auto wire harness. Iirc the wire harness and ecu from the NA will not work on her turbo car ;).
