Does anyone go around correcting people who speak incorrectly? Its so common on forums and chats. I never see someone walk up to a stranger and call them an idiot for having a poor grasp on the english language though...

Dam you internet tuff guys and your dictionaries and your fancy schoolin'.

[strike]Id[/strike] I'd spit on someone who walked up on me and said that I [strike]dont[/strike] don't [strike]talk right[/strike] speak correctly.

What about someone who says you can't write worth a shit either? :icon_razz

If you really want to get anal about it...

I'd = I would Don't = Do not

And as for "Walked up "on" me", im not 100% sure but would that not be "Walked up TO me"

Abbreviations are apparently for lazy people...

I won't just walk up to strangers and inform them they speak poorly. I will however ask someone I know why they say something the way they do if it is incorrect.

This isn't a forum full of complete strangers. I mean I haven't met everyone, but I "know" people enough to ask them why they put the dollar sign after the digits.

when typing on a forum such as this or during an instant message session i omit almost all punctuation unless i deem it necessary. periods always, capitalization never, and apostrophes sometimes.

it is simply faster this way and i still strive to use proper grammar when doing so. there is no reason in my eyes to type posts on a forum as if i were writing a term paper.

its the evolution of the language. right before our eyes.

I agree, if the person your typing to can read and understand then its a success. I know when Im reading something I dont care about any punctuation or spelling. I like to think Im smart enough to know where they should go and understand what the person is trying to communicate. If I dont understand then it must be Really bad and I ask them to retype slower lol.

Not saying anything about anyone here, but to me the people that nitpick over this kinda stuff are just elitist. They want reasons to put themselves above other people. They may not even realize they are doing it who knows, I just see no reason to nag someone over a capital letter. If you cant read a paragraph without proper capitalization and understand it, well you got your own issues I think.

The only reason I type as well as I do is because I got nagged and decided I cant beat'em join'em. At least now alot of my posts get answers that help rather than 'you need to learn to format a proper post'. Also, its what the people that run this place seem to like, so for all the free help Ive got here its a small price to pay.

dam elitist.

dam elitist.

It's not like I post a thread like this every day ragging on people for not using proper grammar and spelling. I know some people feel they don't have the time to make each and every post a prized piece of English literature. This was more a curiosity of mine, I wanted to understand why people do what they do, and why people don't type things on forums the way that is generally agreed upon for writing the English language.

I must say though, this thread did not turn out as I originally anticipated.

I try not to be rude about it when I ask people I know about things like this. I'm just curious I guess, it's why my friends call me "Whiskers."

As I said I was really targeting you, just you asking about the dollar sign made me think of it really and I got off topic lol.

Im one of the people that puts the $ after the number. I guess when I go to type an amount Im more focused on the numbers then realize its money and add the $. I dont take the time to go back and place it in front. I figure people will understand it just fine so no reason to be proper about it.

Generally, I've seen it that people lack education these days, they spell things phonetically and say them the same way. Half the time they don't even know what the real words are.

On this forum I have seen people render the phrase "for all intents and purposes" as "all intensive purposes", etc.

And no, the $ sign has nothing to do with US although it sounds good:

WHEW!! Glad I'm not the only one that's noticed this poor trend. I was in the checkout line at the base store a couple weeks ago, and these people in the line with me were talking about their kids (who happened to have the same teachers), and another whose child wasn't in the same class as the others. The guy tells the mothers that when he transferred back from Japan, they stuck his son in the grade of his age, but he was doing poorly because he was bored. The school wouldn't test him, even though the father insisted. Also, one of the mothers commented on the fact that their kids were in 5th grade or something like that and only just learning to write in cursive. Shit, I learned that in 3rd grade! I told the mother that, and she said it depends on what school I'm in?????? WTF are they (not) teaching kids these days?!?!?!

Anyway, sorry for the long post, but wanted to share that.
