CT26 compared to other turbo's...

Just looking for details on the CT26 and how it stacks up to other turbo's...been looking to replace mine in the near future and was wondering if the Garrett T28 was any good. Looking for a little more power (max 400, EVER) but i still want quick spool :)

There are a few IHI and Garrett jobbies on eBay - quite a lot of T3's off Ford Escorts and the like, but i'm guessing these wont be universal?

You want power, not boost. Boost doesn't equal power. Boost is the resistance for the air being pushed by the turbo to flow through the engine. I'd rather have 400 HP on 10 psi than 15 psi. Hell, my goals are 450-500 on no more than 15 psi. ;) I can tell you this though. If you use an upgraded CT, it's going to take at least 15 psi to get up 400 HP depending on how much work you've done to the engine to make it breath in and exhale better. The smaller turbos (quicker spooling ones) will have to push in more air (more psi) to make the same power as a bigger turbo pushing less.

Well currently i have a K&N Panel Filter for the intake, and the exhaust is an HKS T-16 3", with the HKS Turbo Elbow...and a blitz twin diaphragm dump valve.

I state 400 as the maximum goal i really want to hit, but thats a few years down the line. I'm doing an engine rebuild and was thinking about a replacement turbo, either an upgraded CT-26 or a Garrett of some description...

I would think an upgraded CT, maybe a 57 trim would be just right for your goals, I just think it's probably going to take more than 15 psi to get where you want to be, but if you build it right, you shouldn't have to worry about pushing more boost ;).

Take a look at this dyno from a CT-26, 57 trim:

I think that probably matches your goals.

Gotta love that instaspool effect it's showing on the dyno ;).

Kinda looks like on the second run they upped the boost, but it looks like it bled off in the upper RPMs because look at the power shift between the two...

Heh - not looking for massive power, just quick spool and the ability to push 15psi some day...

Wasnt the T28 or the GT28R known as the 'disco potato'?

The GT28RS (truely called GT2860RS) is what is known as the "disco Potato" and is way to small for the for a 3liter motor. A pair of them would be good for a 3liter, but not one. That trubo is only good for a max of 360HP (flywheel) and at that point it is in very poor efficiency range. Now the GT2876R would be a better choice from a quick glance at the compressor map, but without actually plotting the motor on the map, you cant tell.

I had an inkling that might be the case...I think for the moment i'm going to stick with the CT26 - but price up how much Bondango can do me a 50 trim for...there are a few other specs as well, but i think a 50 trim will tide me over for a little while yet.
