I think I'd rather be in a car that's designed to crush and take the brunt of the impact rather than me taking the hit. As you can see, cars can and will be replaced. But that's just me.
I've never been impressed with a car that could hold its shape after its been in a bad accident. All I can think of is the passenger got jarred around pretty bad.
While true to some extent, cars that crush up like a can will kill you in a slight accident. Only the front and/or rear should crumple a marginal amount in an accident with another car of like size. If you cream something stationary like a barrier, at highway speed, then it should crumple up like a sardine can. If hitting a neon at 40mph writes off a car because of frame damage... what will happen when an F350 hits you at highway speed? The steering column will crush your knees or the doors will fold in trapping you... or god knows what else.
I see what you're saying, but I think there's alot more to it. There's alot of videos about 3 star crash rated vehicles compared to 5 star... and 1 star ratings are just simply scary. You'll not want to step into anything like that after you see the poor dummy get scraped out of the wreck.
