I've been reading on these "upgraded crank pulleys" and while it is interesting and sounds enticing I was thinking that perhaps theres a downside.. I actually spoke to someone selling them and they were very informative however even they admitted that out of 20 ppl half will say one thing, the other half another..

So heres the deal, I hear our stock unit can separate and fly apart and that upgrading can solve this issue.

However at MVP they say that the stock unit utilizing aluminum or something to that effect is part of the problem and that making one out of billet steel is the solution. Problem is the one that I originally looked at is made entirely from aluminum and my personal worry was losing any dampening or balancing effect the stock unit carries.

What are your ideas on this guys? Should I just keep it stock? hell I'm BPU+ and I'm gonna treat well and not beat on it.

oh and heres something to entertain you while you think about it...;)

incorrect on all accounts.

The dampner that MVP sells are made by ATI performance.

Those dampners are aluminum. They are fully damped and SFI 15.1 approved. The off the shelf unit is good to about 500 hp sustained. Burst like in drag racing can go very high but requires frequent inspection.

well thats all I wanted to know, I figured that the stock unit had to be pretty durable up until a certain point and I'm pretty sure I'll never go past 450whp, and for now 300-350whp is all its gonna be on.

I appreciate the help fellas, as always very informative and educational.

8 lbs of rotating mass taken off the crank pulley would make the same type of difference as a lightweight driveshaft or lightweight flywheel. If you add all the weight savings from all those items combined, plus having a 20% underdrive crank pulley, it is definitely something you would notice. A set of lightweight wheels is another important thing. We're going to dyno Daves car, then throw on the lightweight underdrive crank pulley and we'll see exactly how much difference it makes. I would guess about 8-10whp.

so what kinda horsepower rating do you guys suggest before having to put out the money for a better dampener?

umm none.

AGE.

87 = 21 years and running
92 = 16 years.

The rubber or what is left of it should be brittle and really not rubber any more in most 7m-1jz dampers case.

So you get a NEW OEM pulley or an aftermarket damped pulley. Either way you pay.

I personally wouldnt put any money into an engine without upgradeing the damper. aftermarket ones work better at a more varied frequenzy which helps protect your engine and make it last longer. HP/$ may not be great, but think of it this way. Would you build a race engine and use a stock radiator? Many people answer yes, so if you do, feel free to keep the stocker. i think $4XX is nothing compared to what it could possibly prevent.

One thing to consider is the ATI damper is actually cheaper than OEM from the dealer...higher quality, lighter...any questions? ;)

Yep! Summit has them for $400 iirc...the dealer wants $450 for the stocker last I checked.

Kinda makes the decision a no brainer ;)

Edit: Actually, the 2J ATI damper (part #918562) is $365...even better ;)

I used unorthodox racing under drive light weight pullys, light weight multi disc clutch, light weight 1 piece drive shaft & light weight 14lb 17" WEDS wheels

You will absolutly most definitely notice 100% of a change I think they say each # you remove from your drivetrain is like removing 100lbs off you cars total weight. Your engine response will be very noticably different fast revving. faster spooling engine braking by downshifting will be noticable to a lot less wear on the brakes lol.

So far damage caused by switching to lighter underdrive pully none.
Performance noticablity very much so!:bigthumb:

you must also know that the 1JZ is bullet proof of a design and the crank absorbs most all the energy left over goes to the flywheel.

Hades will freeze over before an Unorthodox crank pulley (or anything like it) will touch any motor I build.

You seriously need to do a little research on what harmonic vibrations do to a motor ;)

every single thing you've ever recommended me has not only avoided a blown my motor (always a plus right?) but has pretty much protected it and allowed it to run better for longer periods of time. so if you are also against, as well as many of my other buddies on here then I'll stay the hell away from them. I'm sort of surprised Evil1.3 likes them, usually he seems against anything thats questionable (at least from what I thought I had gathered).
