I have read a few threads about the same issue, had already tried everything listed, but I could not find a thread with a resolution...

I have followed the TRSM for installing the CPS, see pics below, verified #1 piston is at the top and all marks line up to TDC, but when I install the CPS and line it up for TDC position, the bolt will not quite go in, see pics below. I would appreciate any and all feedback. I understand it will be adjusted once running and using timing light, but if I am supposed to fudge it, which way?

Lined up per TRSM for installation...

installed with everything still at TDC...

Have you verified that the Damper is correct for TDC?

The outer ring can and does slip giving an incorrect TDC, pull #1 plug use a chopstick and sit it on the piston.

Turn the crank and watch the Chopstick, it will stop before heading back down, at this point check the damper against the timing case mark.

Yes I did, but just did it again and again... tried it 4 or 5 times and with the naked eye, I was right on 0deg or within 2deg of 0 when it appeared to stop at the top of the stroke... argh

When crank is at 0 timing marks line up on cam gears... they might be oh so slightly off, but to move a tooth they would be much further off...

Turn the housing back a bit and put the bolt in. At TDC rotator will be just past the pickup.

Like he said it will never line up when you insert the cps. It will always move one tooth all you gotta do is while the cps is inside like in the picture turnit back one tooth.let me look for the link to Shaeff thread be right back

Thank you for the info, that is the exact post I was using, but it states that once it is installed that I can spin the housing so that it lines up, but what I was saying is that when I make them line up after installed, the bolt hole is partially covered...

Earlier today I was installing with a printed off version of that post and pic, looking at pic and zooming in on the picture I think I found my confusion, I no longer have a mark on the rotor, so I assumed it meant the tip of the rotor was to be aligned which is impossible while still putting the bolt in... Now seeing that the mark is before the tip which puts the tip right where mine is... so I think I am all good now...

I would appreciate any further feedback that what I just listed made any sense lol...

Yes thanks IJ, that is how I was installing it, which is per the TRSM, it notes something to the point of lining up the pin hole with the notch on the shaft (pic #3 above, bad angle I guess) but the notch is right below the pin hole before installing, that puts the tip just a little CCW but once installed puts it a little CW of being aligned.

So IJ, if you would confirm my assumption that my mistake was not having a mark on the rotor any longer, so I was trying to line up the tip not the mark, so on mine the tip will not line up while it is at 0deg TDC and be able to put a bolt in it, but if I set it at 10deg BTDC the bolt will go in... so that sounds right now, I just could not see the where the mark was in the picture on paper until I zoomed in on the .jpg image itself tonight...

Thanks to everyone for your input!

I usually just set mine up so 10 BTDC on the damper and the CPS tooth just coming to the trigger with the adjustment bolt in the middle of the slot is enough to get it to run and then do the fine adjustment with a light and the Diag Jumper in place.

Yep sounds like the path I ended up going down and of course when I get the other 1001 things done and ready to run... I will get it timed with a light (and yes caught the bold note on that timing post about the Diag Block Jumper)...

Thanks again IJ and other posters for your insight, always appreciated!!!
