Could you escape, and live the rest of your life undetected?

We were just having a general current events type conversation at work, and we discussed the buy who parachuted out of his plane, and tried to have auto pilot take the plane out into the gulf of Mexico. Discussion then came up about if you had to run, what country would you go to. I contended that if you were smart enough, and covered your tracks, you could stay right here in this country and live undetected for the rest of your life. I've never put much thought into how I would do it, because I have nothing to run from, so no planning has been done. But talk quickly switched to if you could or not. I thought it would be fun to hear opinions from all over. I think it could be done if planning was well thought out. This is a huge country, with vast amounts of uninhabited land. I wouldn't want to live in the woods forever, never seeing human life, but the woods could be useful during the first year. I'd want to assume a new identity and appearance, so outside city life would be possible.

What would you do if you just offed the spouse (I could never do that myself) or had some other reason to flee (ie securities fraud, tax evasion, etc).

None of your fucking business
I would live in the crawlspace under my house. The entrance is in the pantry, so if someone lived there I could eat their food in the middle of the night. I could tap into their plumbing for water and to take a dump in. I'd spend the day digging tunnels to the neighboring homes to tap into their pantry's for a little variety.

Wyoming sucks for Supra's, I was in wyoming for 3 hrs in my supra and got rearended...

No one would be able to find me if I really needed to get away. A couple of years in the back country of Vermont and New Hampshire, then migrate up to Canada with forged documents (birth certificate and whatnot) where I would establish residency under my new name, finally moving in with family in Italy with my new name. Who is to say that I don't already own property under other names in other countries? Not that I do or anything:sarcasm:

I know of a murder case here in the US that the guy disappeared for 30 something years before accidently getting publicity by the town folk wanting him to become mayor.

There was a case similar of a female bank robber who lived somewhere in Oregon and was outed for similar reasons.

Scott, Vegas would be the easiest. Lots of daily pay jobs. One city where getting lost is no problem at all.

Well, if the right people want to find you, you will be found, Just a matter of time. It all depends on what you did i would assume. But i like the double move idea...hide out for a while, long enough to grow a beard or lose or gain a lot of weight to look totally different. Then forge some documents, move around to a few different countries. I would prob end up settling in Europe or somewhere i wouldn't stand out because of my skin color. Living in the woods permanently would just not be an option for me. Id rather do some jail time then spend the rest of my life in the woods lol. Unless i found a nice deserted beach somewhere. That would be nice
