Could my CPS gear be slipping?

My car has not been on the road for a while now. I set the CPS up correctly so that the two metal parts that are slightly magnetic were touching at TDC. I put the cover back on and adjusted it up and down to get 10* of timing.

It was fine for a while. I've just been idling it and driving it around the block, no real street driving. However, I just checked my timing the other night and it was really high, maybe 30*. Could my CPS gear be slipping or moving on its own?

Extremely unlikely. There is a pin that holds the gear in place, that would need to be sheared completely off on both ends, and even then, friction would likely keep it lined up.

Well, my base timing with the TE1 and E1 jumped has changed.

Can the CPS adjust itself or is base timing set completely by assembly?

I just looked at the CPS gear and it seems fine. Nothing seems shaved off. Its all bronze in color except for a light silver portion in the center of the splines where the gears are touching. I'll have to take a look at the cam gear to see if it looks right.

I don't know why else my timing would have changed so much without me doing anything. I swear it did this once before as well, but that time I thought that maybe I just set it wrong. But this is the second time it happened.

Your belt didn't slip, did it? Is the tensioner in good shape? If it's bent, the motor won't stay in time.

Or, did the bolt for the CPS just loosen up, and maybe it turned a bit that way?

Is the cam/crank timing still perfect?

I have the same problem you plug a wire into the diagnostic port and it only retards the timing a tiny bit just enough to notice the car runs ok but it would be nice to cure I checked the belts and they line up...When you plug the wire into the port what does it effect to change the timing ....Barry

your Belt Didn't Slip, Did It? Is The Tensioner In Good Shape? If It's Bent, The Motor Won't Stay In Time.

Or, Did The Bolt For The Cps Just Loosen Up, And Maybe It Turned A Bit That Way?

Is The Cam/crank Timing Still Perfect?

it dosent affect anything it is so you can set base timing and then remove the jumper for true timing. the base timing will be at 10 when you remove the jumper it will bump it up to 12 as per 7mgte motor

well I checked the belts and they align perfectly as for the CPS bolt coming loose it was tight..and when I check the codes it is blinking constantly which I thought means everything is ok...Barry

Keep in mind, that it's a bit difficult to tell if it's actually bent. I didn't know mine was bent until I had a new one sitting next to it.

Well I went out to check thing out without a flashlight in my hand and the belt has slipped trying to do things in the dark sucks and now it is raining Thanks for the help Later Barry
