So im about to get my head resurfaced and get a valve job to go with it
but im in a dilemma
which gasket to use? ...mls or copper
i keep hearing all the usefulness of copper
but at the same time, likewise for mls

i want to be running about 500rwhp eventually, not yet without a new turbo
the ct isnt gonna cut it...
but to prepare for the future i would like to get a gasket that will suit my vision

im running a completely stock 7mgte right now, well its not running
half the engine is out, but its all stock for the most part
ive already got all the stuff for an air to water intercooler setup
so, yea give me your ideas! :D

p.s. it says that im a lurker :{

I wanted to do a Copper head gasket, but i remember reading Mike (Supracentral), chiming in somewhere and saying that on a motor with 2 different metals aka the cast iron block and aluminum head was a bad idea. Think of it as adding a third metal to the mix.

Do what I do.

Get a Cometic and spray coats of copper on it.

well whats the advantage of getting a metal head gasket then spraying copper on it? I thought the copper originally was supposed to be better because it does not corrode as easily or blow through. So then wouldnt the purpose of copper be lost?

maybe i should just go without a gasket and hope for the best
like they do on those twin V motorcycle engines haha :p
just kidding of course..

Copper MHGs require the block to be O-ringed...very difficult (if not impossible) to do on a 7M due to the small space between cylinders.

You do not ever want to use a spray sealer on ANY make of MHG. Zum has it...I wrote the link he posted. Suggest you read it DegreE ;)

do they really requireee it? I understand the concept of o-ringing and yeah its almost a perfect seal if done correctly. but i thought you could theoretically have no o-ring and still be fine along the lines of similar results with a metal gasket

the best MLS headgaskets have built in O-rings...

Copper has issues sealing the cooling jackets properly, and are designed for race cars that are torn down often.

I don't know of ANY car maker that uses one from the factory, while MLS or the typical composite style are everywhere...

I come from a land down under
1 small detonation and the 7M will blow a Copper MHG between cylinders without O-Rings.

Not to mention the point Poodles makes about trying to seal ALL the various passages (water/Oil Pressure/Combustion/Oil drains)

MHG FTW ;) OEM Toyotas gasket passed after 1month of boosing (all the work was done at dealership), so there's no point to put stock gasket, it just costs more eventualy ;)

^ Stock HG works fine for lower HP numbers as long as it has the proper torque.. When the dealership did your HG they torqued to factory 56ft/lbs which = your problem. Just get a metal headgasket and some ARP studs.

If you're only getting the head resurfaced and not the block, use a stock style stock composite gasket. You have to get both surfaces perfectly smooth to use a MHG.

Cometic gaskets are great for stockish applications

From what I have heard, and seen they are the best. Slow66 ran one in his DD 10.5 second car and it held up. He said he probably will be using one in his new drag car as well. If they can take that kind of beating, then I would run one.

The HKS stopper is the best, it is also $300

The Cometic is the most forgiving, requiring a RA of 50 or less, the others are in the range of 30 or less IIRC
