Cooling at Highway Speed

i AM HAVING A COOLING ISSUE AT HIGHWAY SPEED, ALREADY HAVE LOW TEMP THERMO STAT....MOTORS RUNS GREAT, BUT ELECTRIC FAN STILL CYCLES, WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS A BELLY TRAY FOR OUR CARS FOR SALE THAT ISNT ALL SMASHED UP....i HTINK THE AIR IS ACTUALLYDIVERTING AROUND TH E RADIATOR UNDER THE CAR AND NOT THROUGH THE RADIATOR..PLEASE, SOMEONE MUST HAVE THIS BELLY TRAY.

..... Lets see possible causes for cooling problems: T-stat may not be opening properly, clogged radiator, air in coolant system, pinhole leaks, bad waterpump, bad fanclutch, no fanshroud, upper rad hose flatening out...did i miss anything else?

My guess: your new t-stat is not opening properly. Did you do a quality check before install?

I dont even run my electric fan 99% of the time, and i usually only drive around town... and i dont even overheat... so you should go check through your coolant system to make sure you have everything up to standard. and you have fluid in it right?

I recently put a Supra together for a friend of mine, and when throwing it together, she couldn't afford a new radiator. The engine had a MHG but was overheating under load and occasionally down the freeway. It turned out that her stock radiator was clogged and replacing it solved all her problems.

Strange, no UK spec supra was ever fitted with an under engine cover. No cooling problems here. My girlfriends Citroen Xantia has an engine under cover I drove it with and without the cover and the engine ran alot cooler without it.

I've seen that engine undercover causing problems when not on...but I would check the easy stuff before buying a replacement that might not fix the problem!

sorry about the caps.... Its a good stat 160degree beck arnley, the radiator is brandy knew, GM style 3 bar aluminum, I have a custom set up so its offset for plumbing reasons. I have a 2800cfm fan on it and it is fine 99% of the time but on those hot days in july in trafic it just starts to get heat soaked AND at high way speeds it allways seem to creep up to the fan on temp and cycles around it, never overheats just clylces. I think I actually have a problem with air not running over the radiator, I think it bypasses its way around and under the rad. I am goin to try a belly pa, I made some blocks for the side it offset from. I HAVE removed the heater pipe altogehter and wondered if this reduced heating efficency? thanks for all the comments.

oh yeah, I didn't mean to sound like a newbee, check out my profile/ride, I know what I am doing, I have been doing it for a while as many of you have. I was merly looking for advice and I thank you all for it.....thank yo for the part number I dont think about buying most of the thes types of parts knew as they are usually out of this world in price and no longer available to us.

Fan doesn't do anything at highway speeds...in fact the only time you really need it is when you are in traffic or driving around town at low speeds.

My car has never overheated, and I don't have an engine undercover. From what I understand, it helps direct airflow through the engine bay, and aerodynamics of the car at speed.

Another thing to look into is debris blocking airflow through the rad. I think it would be worth the effort to remove the rad and check it out.

^^ or the A/C condenser. I'd also look into coolant flow restrictions. From looking at the manual, I think the only thing the heater pipe would effect is the heater.

Hehe, running Machanical Fan, no shroud and no underbelly pan. Went through black friday traffic and the temp needle didn't even get halfway.

I come from a land down under
Mine runs +5>8c at 70 mph without the undertray (going by MoTeC logs and NOT the stock gauge)

My cooling system is about as good as you're going to get on a Mk3 so any less I'd expect to see a bigger difference in temps.

The stock gauge has a dead zone and isn't linear it goes 84,85,86,87,88,88,88,88,88,95,96 and so on (not exact numbers)

So you think all is well when in fact it's rising in temp then by the time you notice on the gauge it's damn hot.

I've made several custom undercovers for my car and there is ALWAYS a drop in temp after adding it. The most recent one dropped the temp down 5 degrees celcius (GReddy Temp Guage) and I still plan to improve the design even further to achieve an even bigger drop in temp once the design is complete. As already stated the undercover also helps improve the aerodynamics under the front of the car and will lead to better gas mileage. The car may run fine without an undercover, but it will run even better with one installed.

Ummm, If i recall correctly the ECU does nto go into cloded loop until 180 degrees (if I am recalling correctly)..........meaning that @ 160 degree you are running open loop which makes the car run richer ALL the time. Higher temps will be acheived at that time too.

That undercover is needed. It quite simple really.

No under cover, air WILL want to move to path of least resistance. Meaning UNDER the radiator and not through it ;)
