yeah i thought 215F was high. but Reg from calgary said oh yeah thats normal. you will see anywhere from 200-215F in operating conditions. i think he said the secondary fan kicks on around 220F. i just wasnt happy with those temps, esp if i was going after big numbers. so i have been running 180F for the past 6yrs or so and has been working well. there have been several people recommend the 160F to me and thought id see how i liked that. havent ran the car yet but thought id give it a go and worst case just swap back to the 180F.

also, my setup is a pwr radiator w/ 13.5psi cap and no a/c condensor. i believe since i have a built auto w/ high stall it may make my car run a little hotter than the avg 7m.

about the fuel/ign correction i believe the tccs does that as well. i cant remem the cross over point of open/closed loop but i want to say it is in the 160F range. im sure you know more about that than i would.

As was stated above, the thermo temp is the 'start opening' temp. It gets the engine up to a min. temp. You need it to keep the oil temp regulated too. Too cool an engine is not good.

I do believe (read in some spec mag) the engine's computer will go into 'closed-loop' operation at 160*.

Depending on outside temps, and driving conditions, your engine will usually run around 180*-200*F with a fully open thermo.

If I had my engine control systems book from Toyota, I would tell you what the expected operating temp is. Perhaps somebody else will see if it is there.

The ECT sensor range does go up to 210 or something. So I would guess 200-210. Your engine runs better at that temp than at 160.

i agree with what you are saying. but, at the same time even with the 180F t'stat the car never ran at 180F. it ran at ~195 to 200 vs 200-215 before. like i said, i havent ran w/ the 160F yet, it was just recommended to me. i thought for $15 id try it out to see how it behaved.
one thing to keep in mind a lot of race cars dont even run a t'stat, they just run a plate restrictor. there again, its that fine line of proper operating temps along with keeping the coolant in the radiator long enough to do its job.

If you can find the thermostat it be a great mod for a stocker, but after you upgrade you WILL break the 160 thermo. I've gone through two of them in less than 3 months with the Koyo.

y will upgrading the radiator and such break the 160 degree stat?

well how did he go threw 2 thermos in 3 months? idk i just dont understand how getting a bigger radiatior will break the thermosat lol. and i dont really think the pressure would break it because by the time the coolant is hot enough to build up any real amount of pressure its prolly hot enough to open the stat.
