I tried searching. I have a jdm 2j in a mkiii. I changed the gauge sending unit and redid the butt plug to the sending unit. The dash gauge sometimes reads hot (pegged at the H) meaning it's grounding and some times reads normal temp. It doesn't seem to be overheating since the fans don't turn on (set at 160F). I tried burping the system but can't get it to burp so i'm guessing it's air in the system or a bad ground somewhere. What do you guys think.

Check the wiring, sounds electrical. If there's coolant up the the top of the radiator with it cold, and you warm the engine (a little, maybe 30 seconds running) and slowly release the cap and some coolant pushes into the recovery tank, then the system is full. The JZ engines aren't hard to purge all of the air out of. If you keep getting air back in you either have a leak, or a bad cap that isn't letting the recovery bottle work right (the top seal on the cap has to seal, so does the hose going to the radiator fill neck).

Is the brown wire on the m1 connector getting a good ground? That needs to be grounded in order for the gauge to work correctly. Mine is pegged at hot after about 30 sec of idle time when cold because im too lazy to pull the glove box out and ground it.
